This is for the 4-4-0T, I think. iirc, it's in the LT Museum

Wow - that's come out of the blue!

Very interesting - would love to see this happen

The tender does say "E class" No. 1, the loco in the museum is "A class" No. 23.

Interestingly, Met.1 was nominally built as a "rebuild" of an earlier No.1 which was accident damaged, don't know whether that an A or B class. Hence being numbered out of sequence with the rest of the E class locos.

Ah, thanks - that clears it up. I knew that The BRC loco wasn't owned by LT - surprised that there's cash to overhaul the loco though - very welcome news

Would be nice to think that the 4-4-0T could steam again though

    Is it German? (Tenderlok)??!!

Seriously, who does won No.1? Must be LT otherwise why are they tendering for the some-one to do the overhaul?

I have heard nothing of this tendering for the BRC owned Met 1 from being there both yesterday and today. Hardly think Quainton would go through this sort of palarva. Sounds more like an LUT thing with a cock-up over the locos identity.

It's the 150th Anniversary of the Metropolitan Line in 2013 - the first part of the London Underground therefore 150 years of LU. As I understand it we have big celebrations planned, I have already seen a similar tender to restore a pre-1900 Metropolitan Railway coach body and put it on a converted underframe. Think it is on the same site as the above one for Met No. 1.

With computer based ATP and ATO systems being installed on the Met by the latter part of this decade there will be a cut off time for running steam trains on the Met, so this anniversary takes on extra significance.

It is not unusual to go out to public tender - don't forget TfL/LU is a local government entity.

    Regards,

    Dan

If there is to be a 150th for the LU does this mean a possible return of Steam On The Met?
    Certainly hope so.

From further enquiries it appears that this tender does refer to the Quainton based 0-4-4 tank loco Met 1.

I doubt it since it is so obviously a typographic error. The description also says it is No. 1, E-class and built 1898, leaving no doubt as to the identity of the loco. Any bidder claiming to be confused or disadvantaged by this minor error would surely not be fit to win the contract.

what state is number 23 in? how easy would it be for LT to move it to their other museum site at neesden if there was to be a special event to mark the 150 years and have a display of all their historic stock with some running (ex iow) if possible along with met 1 and the bluebelle met coaches , its only a thought

It would be great to see no. 23 outdoors again even if not running (would I be right in thinking it hasn't steamed since 1948?) - but I reckon it would be very difficult to extract this or any other railway vehicle from Covent Garden.

No. 23 was taken outside for the 100th Anniversary of he Met / LU in 1963. I've seen a photo somewhere of it coupled to a couple of wagons with the caption saying the whole train was propelled by one of the Electric locos or a Battery Loco.

What an excellent opportunity for the armchair experts to bid to win the contract to overhaul a steam locomotive!

The tender document says: "It is the intention of the London Transport Museum to contract for the heavy overhaul and recomissioning of Metropolitan Railway 4-4-0T (E-class) Steam Locomotive, (No1, built 1898), to a condition which is acceptable for operation on preserved heritage railways, and for special service on the London Underground system. All work undertaken will be required to meet Railway Group Standards GM/RT2003 and NR MT/276." (my highlighting)

    Looks promising...
