Report seen elsewhere says that 9F 92214 has today been named "Cock-o'-the-North" with nameplates in the style as applied to LNER P2 No. 2001.

Given that some inquisitive youngster is going to ask his or her parents about the meaning of the name, the best I can do at present is to say that the name was lifted from a North British Atlantic, which then received the name "Aberdonian" from the first of the class, then recently scrapped.

So I guess the answer is, "its Scottish", but beyond that does anyone know the origins of "Cock-o'-the-North" as a name?

Cock O' The North is the name given to the Chief of the Clan Gordon.

Strange name to give to a 9F.

This is from a press release issue by the owners aand explains the reasoning behind the naming.

That doesn't explain anything except that it was felt that the engine has to have a name because it appeals to the passengers. The rather tenuous link to the NYMR and the Edinburgh - Aberdeen mainline is rather implausible.

However, named or not, it is a powerful well cared for loco doing useful service on a Heritage railway, and mercifully carries the correct black livery!

And as has been said before, the owners dont have to justify their actions, it is their perogative.

Just be thankfull it is out there doing what it is doing.

I like the bit about the "original" Cock O' The North, conveniently ignoring the NBR Atlantic which carried the name before it, being "very similar" to the 9F. Well they are both steam locos but the similarities begin to end there. Owner's prerogative to do as they like though.

Very true but their attempts to justify it seem a bit off.

"mercifully carries the correct black livery"
So would you have been miffed if they had repainted it? :)

No, I was just relieved that there is no need for pages and pages of livery discussion!

Anyway, for those who are pedantic about names, there are at least two unrestored ex-Barry 9Fs around, so with some enthusiasm and £500k you could have your very own, maybe you could even name it Earl Marischal, Lord President, Mons Meg, Thane of Fife, etc etc......

Or you could even restore a nice 2-10-0 that is already named, and rusting quietly out in the open on the NYMR.....

Now that will upset someone, no doubt!

Hmm, a 9F in LNER Apple Green...

... would rather like to see that!

    Regards,

    Dan

p.s. agree with the owners perogative statements above.

Dame Vera Lynn was the "Forces Sweetheart" and did much good work in raising the morale of Allied troops in WW2 so IMHO much more fitting to name a WD loco after her than a Yorkshire based 9F after a Scottish chieftain. As I said before though, owner's prerogative.

If I had £500K, 34081 would be up and running again.

They weren't justifying, they were explaining - they don't have to justify their decision!

So does this mean that the P2 now has to have another name?
As I believe some people were wanting to use it rather than create another name.

I don't like it. It's not historically accurate. There is something poetic I believe in the fact that Evening Star was the only named 9F. But David Shepherd threw that out of the window by giving 92203 a bloody silly name, so now 92214 has another bloody silly name and it seems the owners of 92207 want to give that yet another bloody silly name (if they ever get around to restoring it). And it's not just 9Fs - the Paignton and Dartmouth are criminal in this respect and for some reason the South Devon are following their lead. It's all to do with the dumbing down of the railways to fit a quaint, twee, uneducated view ideal of how the past used to be. "ooh isn't it nice" they say, no it bloody well isn't.

Well it's not as bad as all these 'J94s'! Preferred it minus the name, but at least it's running...
