Wondering the same thing, as I read something about 7000 having minor work done

    The Cathedrals Explorer

Anyone know what time 34067 leaves Kenny O on Friday morning? And is the tour officially starting from there, or from Minster (as is implied by the Steam Dreams website)?

    Re: The Cathedrals Explorer

I notice that 60019 (aka 4492) is shown on UKsteam as an alternative to 70000 on Saturday and Tuesday. I heard a rumour at the weekend that Britiannia was having attention to some part of her motion, and this would appear to support this. Does anyone have any firm news one way or the other?

Hi Mods - could you perhaps merge the two threads about the Cathedrals Explorer? Ta.

    Re: The Cathedrals Explorer

With 4492 being at York at the moment, and 46115 being at Carnforth, what are the chances that 4492 will work the first leg (York - Appleby - Carlisle) and 46115 the second (Carlisle - Dumfries - Stirling)? Besides the reduction in positioning mileage, we know that 46115 is in-guage for the GSW line since she went that way just before Easter. The same reasoning also suggests to me that 46115 might be used on Tuesday from Glasgow to Oxenholme via Beattock.

Ok, now merged. I'm sure there was another thread towards the end of last year about this tour but I have searched back 6 months worth of threads and don't seem to be able to find anything.

I am hoping to get out on Saturday to see this at perhaps Helwith Bridge. If we don't get the rain that is forecast for Thursday/Friday here in the northwest and Scotland there may be some serious concerns over fire risk.

    Forecast:-

Report on one of the Yahoo groups that 70000's sections will be hauled by 34067 instead, ie Carlisle - Stirling and Cadder Yd - Oxenholme.

Should be interesting to see and hear, probably on a (partially) green train too?! Or is there a set coming down from Carnforth. Either way should be a good weekend if we get the weather :/

It'll probably be the shorter maroon set from the 45305 and 70013 trip last Saturday. Bit more posh. :)

I'm guessing that we should know for definate by tomorrow night at the latest, to allow for all of the checks needed go mainline, would 34067 be in gauge for 7000s supposed section?

Just had a quick look on uksteam info and they are now listing 34067 on the Carlisle - Stirling section and the return.

Interesting. UKsteam.info now says the same. I wonder why Tangmere has got the call rather than DoNZ? Maybe they couldn't get a support crew together at short notice? Or maybe it's a gauge issue - though if that was the case, then why not send 46115 to Scotland and run 4492 over the S&C? Not that I'm complaining. On the contrary, I'm looking forward to seeing a Spamcan on the G&SW and in the Clyde Valley on Tuesday evening.

I'm guessing that getting a support crew for 60019 may have been an issue as it would probably have meant a 7 day stint for them - loco+POB from York to Carnforth (or Carlisle) on Friday, work the Explorer to Stirling on Saturday, two days layover in Scotland, work the leg back to Oxenholme on Tuesday, then back across to York on Wednesday ready to work the RTC Stratford trip on Thursday.

    Re: The Cathedrals Explorer

Bulleid's "light pacifics", especially in original form, have very good route-availabilty. They have a fairly light axle-load (about 18.5 tons, I think) and were designed to fit the rather restricted bridge-holes of Kent and Sussex. There are very few parts of the current network where Tangmere cannot go. Of course, the same comments apply to the Britannia class, too, which is why Ollie and Tangers were so sorely missed last year. There were several tours that they were rostered for, where the only possible substitutes were Black 5s. Now, a 5MT is an impressive loco, but sometimes you do need a 75-mph class 7.

Will this be the first visit of a Spamcan to the G&SW or the Caledonian main line in "modern times", or did City Of Wells venture north of the boarder?

34027 did Beattock in style a few years ago - I came back in from head out up to the summit in the rain completely black down one side - and deaf too! much to everyone's hilarity!

West Countries and climbs - a great match!

Do I have to drive to Stirling again? - I only got back on Sunday night!!!!!
