So how come this one is steam - running into Network Rail NE territory, but the Cathedrals Explorer running out and into well forecasted rain that was actually occurring yesterday evening is box hauled???

I appreciate forward planning, but if piloted light engine moves are suggested as cheaper than steam alone, could not both contingencies have been covered given the very well publicised breakdown of the dry spell yesterday - before today's excursion had turned a wheel?

I agree entirely. It just does not make any sense at all. The weather forecast for rain in all areas was a "definite" not a maybe. I get the impression that certain NR sectors adopt a Knee-Jerk reaction and do not think things through.

As I understand it there is currently a ban on steam specifically on the Settle and Carlisle line, which explains why the Cathedrals Explorer is diesel hauled but wouldn't affect 70013's run

Excellent view. I've seen that shot used many a time, but still to this day am not sure...is it northbound or southbound there?

It makes perfect sense. I presume The Cathedrals Explorer is diesel hauled today as WCRC had no locos close to York so sending one out there from Carnforth only for it to have to go all the way back again if it was disallowed would have been a waste of time and money, where as 70013 was at Southall anyway and hauled its own empty stock to Watford this morning.

This one's a southbound shot taken from the west side of the line at Hasland, just on the south side of Chesterfield. There are also northbound morning locations that get the spire in view just to the north of Chesterfield station. This one at Hasland is now much more difficult both to access and get a pic because the dreaded palisade fencing has been erected along the lineside and where you'd normally access the field. You either need a very long telephoto, or big steps.

Lovely shot, Paul. Are you glad that you did the assault course training now?

Worth it I think, just to get the spire. Hopefully, the footpath will reopen before long and access will be somewhat easier. I think someone mentioned it was only temporarily closed while they decontaminate the old works.

Is there nothing in preservation that would do a 'tender' swap with Ollie/ Brittania... 4250 Gallons doesnt give that long a range for a loco of this size..., come to think of it is there a preseved example of a BR 1A ? ...( I know of a BR1f, now that would be handy...)

70000's tender no longer carries the internal "gubbins" related to the water scoop, this was removed to "up" the water capacity, estimated as being a further 500 gallons. This was done in the 1990's.
