I see there are two Tornado models available from Bachmann and Hornby. Wanting to buy one of them in Apple Green livery. Which one is better? Are there any differences between them? Colour, decoration, detail. Cheers

As the Hornby one is not yet available to the public or the press, it's impossible to accurately answer this.
However, as I understand it, the Bachmann model is a standard A1, without the detail differences present on Tornado. It is beautifully decorated.
The Hornby one may be more faithful to Tornado, but what the overall level of detail and decoration will be, we are not yet sure. It will, however, be significantly cheaper than the Bchmann model.
I'm sure someone will have more precise information later.....

IIRC, there will be two Hornby versions too - a fairly high-spec one, and a 'Railroad' range one, aimed more at kids' 'train sets'. Clever idea, imo. I've got one of the latter on pre-order already for a nephew :)

Bachmanns model has an accurate tender for tornado (not sure about the loco moulding) but Hornby's is based on tornado herself so will be fully accurate for her. The Hornby one is cheaper from what I can recall and has a better motor - it is due soon so we may get the detail answer soon.

Right that explains why I have not seen the hornby one, Might wait and see what it looks like when released. Feel free to post further comments so I can make a good decision when the time comes. Also why is the same model being made by 2 manufacturers at similar times?

Quick answer is different price range, different market sector. Beyond that you would have to address the question to Hornby's marketing dept. who would probably give the same answer as above, anything more would be commercially sensitive!

The Railroad model should be out this month with the standard version and the set with the BR green model out during June.

Bachmann made two versions of tornado, older ones (pre2008) use the standard mould.
The newer ones use a complete new body and tender mould based off tornado as running today.
This includes things like the air pump behind the smoke deflector and printing of plaques below the name plate etc.
The tender is as 60163, with rigid plate not recessed on top.

The only thing as far as I am aware wrong with the post-08 model is the trailing truck and tender should have roller bearings - Bachmann used the standard mould for them.

The overall height of 60163 is somewhat lower than the previous A1s.

Thus the dome is flatter and lower, different boiler mounts mean the boiler sits lower, cab sides are lower, chimney is lower. Thus the Bachmann model, while being an acceptable model of an A1 is actually slightly too high to be 'Tornado'.

The Hornby model is supposed to address these issues, the flip side to the coin being it will not be correct for any of the preceding 49 A1s.

Having seen Tornado a few times now I was not see the airpumps behind the smoke deflector, I understood they were between the frames and thus invisible and hardly worth modelling in this scale. Behind the defectors is the chime whistle and (clearly visible) the turbo genny. Am I wrong?

Still have not bought the Tornado model yet. Only want to buy the Apple Green version with BRITISH RAILWAYS on tender.
I was not interested in the Bachman version due to it just being the normal A1 type, not specific to Tornado. I am not interested in the Hornby Railroad one its too cheap looking. I was intersted in the Hornby Railroad Ltd Edition but has moulded handrails, non sprung buffers, no tender pickup etc. I wonder why Hornby made a Ltd Edition model not up to its usual high standards. I see the Hornby Brunswick Green version is much much better.
I also see Bachmann has now produced a new version taking into account detials specific to Tornado. I have been looking for a review of this somewhere. Has anyone got details about this model and the enhancements made to it to bring up closer the the real Apple Green Tornado. cheers. Darryl

Looking at the N guage Tornado , i was very keen to get this but on inspection the fat red lines and bogie wheels are a little offputting... Is this as good as n guage gets ? the sneak previews of the Dapol A4's at least had bogie wheels that didnt look like they were off a matchbox car...!

As noted earlier in this thread the post-2008 Bachmann model is probably the best representation of Tornado prior to her repaint. I have one and am very happy with it. Having seen the Hornby one I consider the Bachmann one to be infinitely superior. Whilst yes the axleboxes are not roller bearing style as fitted to Tornado, this is the only major difference and is not visible when the model is in motion or you are more than 18" away from it!

The body itself is directly based on Tornado and has the different tender top and accoutrement (chime whistle, stones generator) behind the smoke deflector, and the model comes with headlamps that you can fit yourself. The smokebox numberplate is in the correct position for Tornado (which for BR apple green livery is technically wrong when compared to the original A1s, which in their early days had the numberplate fitted above the top hinge bracket, not on it). The general detail is superior to the Hornby limited edition model, with separately applied detailing rather than moulded on.

The difference in height between Tornado and an original A1 is 1", which in 4mm scale equates to 0.3mm! Not sure if you'll notice the difference - I wouldn't!

This post just does not make sense. All Hornby variants share the same bodies so I fail to see how the BR green Hornby Tornado is "much much better" The Bachmann model has not really been changed, their only new model is in 'N' gauge.
If the Bachmann model is over height then it is by a scale 1.5 inches, which in 1:76 scale would be very difficult to detect.

The explanation for the Hornby model, even in limited edition form being simply down to price. In my opinion both Bachmann and Hornby produce fine models of Tornado. As to which one I feel it is down to want you want to pay, for my money the Hornby Limited edition model would always be my choice (and I own both the Hornby and Bachmann models of Tornado.)

May I suggest that the OP is not really serious about purchasing but is what the motor Trade refer to as a 'tyre kicker'!

Gee thanks for calling me a tyre kicker. You don't even know me. Thanks for all the helpful comments to my question, most helpful. To put a bit of background behind my questions. I collect 00 gauge models of steam trains I have travelled behind during my visits to the UK. That means preserved 00 gauge models of high quality from bachmann or hornby. Often the exact locomotive I want to buy is not available so when one appears I make sure it is as close as possible to the one I travelled behind with as much detail as possible. This is where my questions about Tornado came from as the original Bachman was not as accurate as I wanted (not worried about the height). Now the Hornby range is out they are accurate not as finely detailed as I like to collect etc (for Apple green with BR on tender) so trying to find enough information to make the right decision to satisfy me. You can call me fussy but this can't be against the law. In my collection I have Hornby NRM Flying Scotsman, Hornby Duchess of Sutherland from Barry Freeman collection, Hornby Clan Line, Hornby Union of South Africa Commonwealth Ltd Edition, Bachman 4MT 46079, Bachman Green Arrow Brunswick Green, Blue Canadian Pacific, Tangmere from Excalbur Express Set, GWR 2-8-0 No 3803. As you can see some of these are recent models as close to or excatly as preserved when I travelled/saw them. You should see my wish list!! (Sherwood Forester, Oliver Cromwell, Duke of Gloucester,...) All I want is to gather enough information to buy the right model, high quality and as accuarte as I can. I have struggled making a decision with the Tornado model. I thought this forum is where I could get some help not get insulted!! Thanks again for your help. Darryl

Without doubt whatever you post on here you will get an answer, the payment is sometimes someone having a dig or a laugh at your expense...
As you rightly say they dont know you... so dont take it personally .

It would be pretty boring otherwise...
