I havent seen any suggestions maintenance is an issue at Southall; it's the overhauls, of 6100 and Flying Scotsman, that have caused the controversy and which some might argue influenced the move of Port Line to Bury.

If you look at "Pete Waterman" in wikipedia it states that 7027 is owned by him.

Is it just me, or are engines that have Scot in their names, jinxed - in so much that over the years they have visited the workshops of those well known engineers Bodge it Dodge it & Leg it, and it is only now when people have a serious vested interest in these beasts that the sheer scale of ineptitude, corner cutting etc is revealed.

How they managed to stay in one piece makes the mind boggle!

Lets hope that this time round they both come out of overhaul as good as the day they were built......

    Re: 6100 Royal Scot..Progress 2010.

getting back to 6100, its worth remembering that vast sums were spent on her , and yet the finished article is widely accepted as being below what is deamed by most workshops as acceptable , now what if she had not been moved to Crewe? would she have gone out with the faults that were found still present? my fear is that she would of, and at some stage failed and probally in the wrong place, at the wrong time and could have caused a re think on steam on the main line.
i cant see how people can continue to defend the un defensible as far as the reputation of the management and standards management of the work carried out the condition of 4472 has lead to a lot of questions about what went on at southall and the same type of faults are apparent on 6100, so it has to be a common thing to do with how things were done ,but no one has explained why or i expect ever will

    Re: 6100 Royal Scot..Progress 2010.

    ^THIS. This, dammit.

It's a big what if - but seriously, think of the consequences. What if Royal Scot had been put out on the mainline, and failed? What would be the worst case scenario?

The mere fact they are lifting the boiler to look at the frames and valve gear must say something about the severity of its mechanical condition. I remember reading in Steam Railway about the "big race" between which Scot was coming back to steam first - and whilst she's had a few, relatively minor, problems of her own, Scots Guardsman has been a revelation on the mainline.

Royal Scot's sorry saga isn't over yet I feel - what will Crewe find next, appears to be the question on many people's lips. I for one hope and look forward to the day she steams, in all her glory, but part of me feels very strongly that rather than covering up or defending the inexcusable, lessons must be learned from the management of Royal Scot and how locomotives are overhauled in this country.

What is perhaps most criminal is that the saga puts a question mark on the validity of the workmanship of volunteers, whereas around the country, superb work is being done by volunteers of all ages, genders and interests. That's my beef with the whole damn saga, one locomotive's misfortunes potentially has the power to ruin the reputation of many hardworking, and professionally minded, volunteers.

It's sobering to read back the reports on what exactly had to be fixed with 4472 by the NRM, and how and why it has affected her return to steam, and the overall cost of the project. Many people have (wrongly) decried the NRM for spending the money on her - but once committed to a project, you have to see it through. That they are getting plaudits (rightly so) for the finished article and the quality of its finish must say something about the differing fortunes of the two "Scots".

    Re: 6100 Royal Scot..Progress 2010.

Perhaps they should change 6100 back to 6152 as this might give the loco more luck once the problems are sorted!
It really is a sad state of affairs with 6100. But hopefully she will soon be in better health under the care of the folk at Crewe.

Last week I heard about some of the "nightmares" that were found on another high profile loco whilst under repair recently. It did shock me at first as I had done some ML runs behind the loco. She is in better hands now thankfully but won't be returning to the ML at the moment. Most loco overhauls are to very high standards but it seems that some "dodgy" work sadly slips through the net.

I never realised that. Anybody could put any old thing in there or is there some sort of "moderation" ?

I think there is a sort of moderation as some things do get changed but changed back to how they were.
