If I'm not mistaken even 34070 ran hot on its way to Eastleigh a couple of years ago. happens to everyone.

    That is correct....

Fault recified at ZG by Swanage staff and has performed well since then.

And NYMR asked to hire 34028 Eddystone as well as 34070 for their Oct 2010 Gala. That was politely declined because of the logistical nightmare of have two locos 300 miles away at the same time!

I must say James after seeing both locos at the Swanage Diesel gala last month. They are a big credit to SLL and Swanage Railway. Both locos looked in splendid condition.

And will soon be joined by 34053, which looks outstanding even in kit form! For those who still have disposable income in these cash-straitened times, if you like what you see with SLL, why not get involved and buy a share or two? I'm intending to purchase another share at some point in the future, this time to help with the overhaul of 34072 257 Squadron. I intend to purchase a share for the locomotive being worked upon from now on.

The place once suggested as somewhere to develop "facilities" was the ex-BP oil terminal at Furzebrook ( actully a gas terminal to be technically correct) which has been closed for some time. However wasn't there a problem in that the planning consent for that terminal said that it had to be " returned to nature" or somesuch condition once it was no longer used for rail traffic?

I queried that site on here a few days ago. If this is the case, then I suspect that the Council would not be averse to new permission rules, given that they've just helped to back the resignalling at Worgret Junction, and decent engineering support is vital in keeping the SR operational & doing its bit to help keep traffic off the roads in the area. That Planning Permission was written well before the SR really 'took off' the way it has

Is it correct that these Standard 4 Tanks were used by BR on the Cambrian Coast Express? If that's correct how much of the route did they cover?

The GWR Manors were used on the Shrewsbury- Aberystwyth part of the route. After they were withdrawn, Standard 4 4-6-0s were used. Not sure if the train was split at Dovey Junction, with a portion going to Pwllheli. If it was split, Std 4 tanks could have been rostered by Machynlleth shed on the Pwllheli portion.

Was split at Machynlleth into the Aberystwyth and Pwllheli parts. Small Prairies used to haul the Pwllheli section but can't think what took over when they disappeared.

Here's a photo of 80104 - SLL's other Standard Tank - hauling an up 10 coach train into Welshpool:

It's not the CCE, but suggests that Standard Tanks may have hauled it on occasions.

Standard 2-6-4T's!! I've a photo somewhere of 80104 on the down CCE at Towyn (as then was) in 1965. Not sure if the 82XXX's were ever used, though.

That would require a trip into the loft and a trawl through some 6000 slides. Unfortunately, many years ago, dear (very young) daughter decided it would be good fun to empty many of my slide boxes onto the floor and I've never got around to sorting them since!

I think there's one or more pictures of 80104 on the Cambrian in either CC Green's "Coast Lines of the Cambrian Rly" Vol 2 or in the thinner paperback volume by W.G. Rear. Unfortunately, I can't find my copy of either to check atm.

Many thanks to those who have responded to my query. It is clear that these locos were indeed used on that service, if anyone comes up with a photo or two that would be a bonus.

It's interesting that they did, it's a long run up the coast and the fireman must have been sweeping out the bunker by the end of it.
