I guess that's THEIR problem!!

 

Peak Rail would be well advised to ensure they are "good neighbours" in respect of local residents. Better that, than fielding complaints and generating hostility, because there's "always one" who might object!
Should be straightforeward to ensure steam crews dont stand at the south end of the station and create smoke. The north end, opposite the carpark and Sainsburys is unlikely to be a problem.

 

So there's no smoke control order in place for Matlock? Even if not, I suggest your attitude to your neighbours is unlikely to serve Peak Rail well. On the Worth Valley we were always extremely careful not to make excessive smoke (anything beyond light grey) whilst sat at Keighley Station, despite preparing for the fearsome bank ahead. Any dark stuff soon had the locals on the phone and the council inspectors round. Should be a doddle therefore not to make smoke on the PR billiard table I'd have thought?

I'm sure Peak Rail are well aware of the potential problem and will act accordingly in order to mitigate it.

 

i go away for a few days and all hell breaks loose!!!!!!!

we have been very aware of smoke issues for many years now, not just with the local buisness` around us and the residents of snitterton road but also with the other train operators,hence for example why we dont sit the train under snitterton road tunnel,blocking the view of EMT trains arriving into Matlock.

such things dont escape me!!!

Been, err, busy. Matlock platform is almost done civils wise, the last few coping stones were going on when I was there today. Still plenty to do, but the furniture has started to go in.

Just out of interest, what will be the mode of operation at Matlock, can you propell out and run round, or will it be in effect top and tail, or at least a "turnover" engine? (one takes the train in, another takes it out....)
I ask because I appreciate there is effectively a long run round loop north of the station, but wondered if that was " out of bounds" in its entirety as far as Peak Rail is concerned.

I'd just like to say that if Peak Rail make the July 1st Matlock opening date then there's a small band of folk who deserve a medal, and I think we know who one or two them are. I hope their efforts are properly recognised by 'the powers that be' when the champagne corks are popping. Hopefully I'll be there to witness it. Well done lads (and lasses?) - I admire your commitment. Iain

 

for a very technical response to the question posed earlier, go back to the start of the forum ,its answered a lot throughout the 38 odd pages as its been asked by quite a few people.

in brief- all of the options, turnover,top n tail are do able ,more so once the signalling is finished at riverside, as for running round -only at riverside, propelling - not on the cards for going back into NR, likewise putting a runround in on the NR bit to use very costly and moreso paperwork intensive, also issues with the close timetabling of PR,EMT service to cause issues.

I guess given your motive power situation you do need a "one steam engine" solution. Maybe a diesel to effect a release by drawing back the stock?

its not so much motive power,theres plenty of shunters that could do the release with, its more the probs of not being able to have a seperate run round, similar problem with eridge and their operation.

It seems strange that there is no ongoing news reporting of the progress. The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway had (and still do) daily updates keeping everyone in touch with their progress towards their reopening.

As Sheff said all of those involved derserve a medal for what has been achieved.

 

I quite agree with you! I don't understand these politics of secrecy shameful of the preserved railways ethics

It's all very mysterious, I'd have expected the website to be regularly updated with photos of the (very rapid) progress. I'm as in the dark as you are, but then I'm only a member and shareholder! What intrigues me is where the money has come from for all this contract work - again, no mention anywhere as far as I can ascertain. Anyone know?

 

At lunchtime on Monday 27th June the Peak Rail works train hauled by BR Blue shunter 08 016 was at Matlock station together with a healthy turn out of volunteers and paid contractors carrying out the last few jobs on Platform 2 before the public opening on Saturday 2nd July. The platform has a temporary surface for the time being as there is more infrastructure to go in later in the year. However, the platform does now have authentic steam era lampposts, running-in nameboards and flowers in oak barrel planters which are in line with it's appearance in BR steam days. Building of the access route from the path to Sainsbury's supermarket on to Platform 2 was one of the last jobs being done on Monday.

i wouldnt say theres any secrecy at all, if you are on the railways own website theres shed loads,its more a case of were all too damn busy with the project, have you noticed ive not updated that much recently on here,even though its relatively simple,mostly thanks to being so busy with both work n the project.
