    Hi all,

War Department livery J94 Austerity, ex Comrie Colliery No7 has now been outshopped at Bo'ness, the locomotive had its first fire as complete locomotive in preservation this weekend. As with eery newly restored locomotive there are a few small bits that need sorting, nothing major, just silly wee things. Acouple of photos are below.

Is that a giesl chimney on it, or is it simply waiting to have its chimney fitted?

Looks like it's the liner for the kylpor blastpipe and chimey fitted on the austerities with Gas Producer Combustion System (GPCS). Have a look at the link for more info on this.

Oh, and being a pedant, assuming she's Bagnall 2777/1945 then she was never a J94!

I thought it might be somethuing like that. As another pedant, not correct for WD livery I'd have thought!

Knowing the Scottish pride in their country I'm surprised at the livery. I'd have thought its NCB Scottish North Area livery would have been the choice!

Only visited Comrie once. A few Austerities in NCB green were dumped, at least one with a Giesl ejector and the one on standby duty, conventional exhaust, was NCB pale blue and yellow. Good to see one of these come back to life.

There were two austerities at Comrie with giesels No.5 and No.7 subject of this thread.

BTW why is the thread entitled War Department J94 there is no such thing!

No.7 was never in use on my visits to Comrie it was No.19 on the first occasion and No.5 on the next two and finally No.19 in 1979. No.7 was always the spare when I went as it had some tubes blanked off. There was a suspicion the front tubepate was flexing as the tubes were giving trouble around the tubeplate holes. I chatted to a fitter about it whilst he was putting new piston rings in the loco.

Id bet a fiver that if you were to examine records in the archives you could find a MOD or War Dept reference to these locos as "J94" in later years and very few references to them as "Austerities" in the early years. They are both just popular names for them, noone suggesting this loco was once owned by the LNER, it simply identifies what type of loco is being discussed.
Whats in a name? as WS once said.

I think they have used a saddletank from one of the Hunslet Austerities ( HE 2880?). The tank originally on 75254 was fitted with the later style of handrail stanchions made out of plain round bar instead of the normal shaped stanchions fitted to all Hunslet Austerities.
The plain stanchions were fitted to The Austerities built by Bagnall, Barclay, Hudswell Clarke, Robert Stephenson & Hawthornes and Vulcan Foundry from late 1944 as a wartime economy measure. They were also fitted to the WD 2-8-0s and 2-10-0s.
