This weekend is the Dean Forest Railway's 'Great Western Branchline Weekend'.

The event features steam engines 14xx 1450 (facing Lydney), Prairie 5521 and Pannier 9681 (both facing Parkend) working Auto, Goods and Passenger services between Parkend and Lydney Junction.

The Goods set should be formed of BR steam era wagons and vans etc, compared to dogfish of the 2009 gala and the relatively modern vehicles last year.

The event will also see crimson BR(W) Hawksworth Autocoach W238 'Chaffinch' released into traffic for the first time since it departed from the P&DSR now over 3 years ago.

Trains run from 0930 until 1700. Cafe and shop open at Norchard etc.

Fares and timetable etc @ http://www.deanforestrailway.co.uk/section.php?xSec=36

This event has most of what was great about GWR branch lines. Must go, especially as 5521 will be at work - I remember my last ride behind her was in Poland in 2007.

I'm hoping to come along, Unfortunately I will miss the first departure from Lydney Junction because the earliest train I can get arrives around 10 minutes after the DFR leaves..the train after that is the auto, will there space to get on this? Otherwise I'll have to wait over an hour for the next non-auto train. What do people think?

The Auto should be formed of 2 coaches, GW 178 and BR 238 going off what I have heard. It would surprise me if it just 238. You should be ok if it is two coach, one usually is packed but two you should be ok. However a walk to Norchard can be done in 40mins if you take it easy. I've done it plenty of times each way and I guess it would be better than waiting at Lydney Jcn.

5521 now has the toolbox removed off its front left side, so with the angle right if you can hide the pump, it looks like how a 4575 should.
