Loco now out of action at the WSR following both connecting rod big-end bearings running hot whilst en-route to the WSR.

Thinking back to her first main line spell , didn't she have similar problems and was then iirc stopped after a couple of tours .

Certainly ran hot on her test run to Shrewsbury as she limped home on one cylinder

Yes, I recall reading about frantic attempts to effect a temporary repair at the trackside at Shrewsbury, and also on a loaded run arriving at Hereford with the crew liberally pouring lubrication on said bearings.
Maybe it is need of optical alignment to ensure everything is in line.

(Or not, as the case may be! Easy to say that from the "armchair" !)

Some pictures are available under "Latest Pictures" at www.wsr.org.uk

RTC have confirmed that they have now secured a replacement engine for next Saturday's Devonian to Plymouth.

I remember seeing video footage of that, years ago. It sounded very peculiar (only 2 chuffs per revolution) as it dragged itself back to base with only one set of motion connected. Doubt if that would be allowed today!

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

Uksteam has 70000 down for the Dorset Coast Express on the 12th July and The Cathedrals Express on the 14th July but both West Somerset Railway websites state that it'll be working services on these dates and won't be leaving til the 16th. Will another loco take up these two charters then?

I think some have said that 70013 has been added to the DCE but not sure on the Cathedrals. I'd like to see 4492 back on but doubt it.

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

UKsteam.info did have 70013 for the return DCE on 12th July, but it was updated yesterday (5th) to show 70000 instead. From this I infer that 70000's test runs on the Wizzer this week have been successful, and perhaps 70013's carers will be glad of an extra couple of days to rectify her recent problems.

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

uksteam.info was updated with info sent by RTC to DCE passengers booked on 12 July. However, today the WSR has announced that 70000 will be working services everyday on the WSR up to AND including Tuesday 12 July ? I understand that test runs on the WSR on Monday and Tuesday were successful, and Britannia started working WSR services as from the 10:15 off Minehead this morning.

Just to add a bit more to this story - RTC had front page advert in Bournemouth Echo today offering return trips on the Dorset Coast Express from Bournemouth to weymouth for £29 return during July. Motive Power mentioned being Tangmere and Oliver Cromwell for July! DH

Letter recived from RTC yesterday advising "The Easterling" sat 16 July will now be worked by 70000 and not 70013. Also this train is now going to Great Yarmouth instead of Lowestoft.

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

Spent a fair amount of time behind 70000 yesterday, sounded fine and not aware of any concerns amongst the four crew on the footplate. A couple of slips, which were quickly corrected, leaving Watchet for Washford in rain.
