The springs go between the boxes and the frames ... thus boxes are unsprung weight.

Good question! I have always assumed that the logical way to progress was to get a wheeled chassis sorted asap which could then be rolled along the production line and married with its boiler and never have to be lifted once it had wheels. Beyer-Garratts and the like would have been brought together as units but I wonder if the same was true for locos which used the boiler as a main-frame such as Mallets?

I do believe that NRM are due to release a press statement in the next week or so after their recent problems in the failure of boiler. It is such a shame that this has occurred however I am sure that NRM will get this fixed as soon as possible

How can the boiler have failed when it passed a steam test not so long ago?

I think someone has the wrong end of the stick here, as we know Scotsmans boiler did have repairs some time back and I think that's what kesr was referring to.

I have now been informed that there is actually another issue with the boiler but not related to steaming, I was unaware of this, so maybe that is what kesr was referring to.

Such a shame, it seems that no matter how much money or labour you put into 4472, she's always going to be a moody old 'gal. Still, I hope she gives Tornado a run for it's money when she's back out! Looking forward to it.

Maybe it's an LNER thing.. Some A4's have been known to be a bit stubborn as well.
The south and west side of the country doesn't seem to have the same foibles

    That's it I duck for cover. ;-)

IR maintains there are no problems with the boiler. As for cracked hornblocks, it looks like they could pay a visit to an engine near you, yes, they are becoming more common according to the same source. I wonder what the accepted means of repair are? Gas fusion welding?

I suspect that someone is confusing 'Scotsman' and 'Tornado'.

If the fella has made a mistake that's fair enough. "RECENT" boiler problems with Scotsman startled me some what.

Recent news has stated that a new crack has been found in the boiler within the last week. I have been spending some time within the area over the last couple of weeks and it was publicly announced on BBC York Radio. I then contacted NRM about this matter whom had confirmed that more problems have been found and due to this Scotsman will now be out of action for another 3 to 4 months

Sorry, I don't know where you are obtaining your information but Ian Riley, whose company carried out the overhaul has stated that there are no boiler problems, only the cracks to the Horn Guides.

On the NYMR 60007 is out of action with firebox cracks, are you getting your locomotives confused!

Anthony has commented on another forum that there are no boiler problems, perhaps he would care to post the same message on here to put a stop to the rumor mill?
