The diesel was attached at Southampton due to the concern that if attached at Eastleigh the whole train wouldnt fit into platform 1. As train was booked to sit at Eastleigh from 1918 - 1944 this would then block the UM for nearly 30 mins.

That said, at the water stop the DL was clear of the track circuit and in the loop so there'll have been another reason

Woking to Clapham was in 21 minutes. It was a really feisty start out of Woking, 60 by West Byfleet and without the 'rockets' that once rained down into the forecourt of a petrol filling station on a memorable occasion when we were inside even time to Waterloo. Up to Roundwood, a particularly cautious handling of a TSR at St Cross had us back down to 33 through Winchester but we went over the top at 50. (DL was idle throughout). We went slow line at Farnborough not Woking Junction to let the late running service train through but then 73 through Brookwood!

There is no other reason. There was a concern that the whole train wouldnt be accomodated in platform 1 so that is why the loco was attached at Southampton.
The train was held at Southampton till a slot at Eastleigh could be found where they could water and if the train did overhang it would not delay any following services

Thanks Al. Steady up Roundwood with that load.

I'd have enjoyed the 21 minutes to passing Clapham from Woking. On for about a 27 and a half minute run with an old style finish into Waterloo. Storm past Nine Elms, whistle blowing to wake up any sleeping crews, 40 round Vauxhall and nicely judged braking up to the buffer stops after rattling and shaking over the entry crossovers. I found it better on the nerves to be in the last coach with some of the Nine Elms crews. At least the last few yards into Waterloo seemed slow then! And some Salisbury crews on the up ACE were masters at coming in from Clapham in under 6 mins 30 secs.

But such finishes, as well as raining firey rockets on petrol stations and wood yards, (Eastleigh for one, that did get burned down once), don't seem to be encouraged anymore. LOL!

Well, you sound as though you have expert info. All I can say is that presumably everyone can do sums, Engine plus 13 plus DL and there is a stop board at the London end of the station. So why there was any doubt it would all fit is a bit odd especially as the crew was careful to draw up to the correct point and the train was well clear. On the train we were told the extended wait at Soton was to do with a signal problem.

The reason the DL was not attached at Eastleigh is there is no calling on signal for such a move. The reasons for not doing it at Woking were the train was too long and the stop would be too long. So the choice was Salisbury, as originally planned, or Soton UG Loop, which was chosen. I thought there was a signal or point problem at Soton, which is why some other trains appeared to be delayed, but we were held until there would not be delays to other services if we were too long to fit in platform 1 at Eastleigh. NR were also claiming that the water stop had been changed from Soton UGL to Eastleigh which was not true, it was always Eastleigh! I think in future attaching the DL at Woking Up Yard should be possible and may have been done in the past.
Thanks to all involved in organising the tour and their patience in dealing with NR!

Apart from that, (Mrs Lincoln), what was the rest of the day like? I.e anyone got anything that is actually of more widespread interest? Like more videos or photos?

But not between Southampton and Eastleigh please.

Never thought I would cause such a disturbance by my innocent comment re the bl..dy box. LOL! Told you before boxes are nothing but a damned nuisance with steam specials. When I win the next big Euro Millions Lottery I'm going to pay to have them all cut up with acetylene torches. Selling tickets so Big Al, Andover, Buseng and many others can sit and watch. No, bu..er it. I'll I won't sell tickets, I'll give them away.

I am now writing out, 100 times,

Never make mention of a change of location where a box is added to the back of a train again.
Never make mention of a change of location where a box is added to the back of a train again.

    Etc etc............

Oh, and also, while I'm at it,

Don't write things that annoy those who earn their living by and/or love box shaped objects fuelled by fractional distillate of petroleum fuel oil.

    I get the picture....

Obviously stating the facts and reasons for the delays is not required then....

Firstly, I apologise for providing the visual evidence of the early addition of the box

It's good to know why she was held at So'ton, you don't mind waiting for ages when it's not the trains fault - all of this discussion makes very interesting reading thank you - she did look good yesterday :clap2:

Was tempted to head out for the return run but didn't bother as I had got stuck into some jobs at home as the weather was poor. Wish I had gone out now after seeing this shot of 35028 powering through Brookwood:

I don't think I have ever seen 35028 put on such a show before. Stunning.

    HUMOUR.

    Definition from YetiPedia.
Stupid comments made to make people laugh, throw up, or to lighten a developing dark situation. Used in most forms of life where it is understood, but only very rarely on National Preservation Forums where it isn't.

Your punishment is to spend the next month watching boxes. And I don't mean the Telly!

And many thanks for finding the clip green five. Sounds really lovely. A MN being worked hard into speed. Heard that just a few times in my life. LOL!

Was the box supposed to be on the back there?

Me too. Link only takes me to a you tube advert page. And I can't find the clip even doing various searches on you tube.

Reckon the box is taking it's revenge.

Or maybe 34098 made a blunder posting it to you tube?

Groan.............that's not funny even to me, and you must have heard it many times before!

I did find a classic you tube sequence of 35028 whilst searching. Lovely initial shot. Telephoto, on a tripod. Ideal for a very gentle camera movement to partly follow the loco with no zoom back and then just let it run out of shot past the camera?

Oh no. This is you tube.

Talk to your mate while you start a whole series of jerking zoom backs and jerky sideways moves to follow the loco. Then a violent pan that starts too late and a half misses the loco. Quick zoom back in as you jerk the camera round, zooming straight onto your mates back, (nice jacket, M&S I think). Then onto an advertising hoarding, then finally a quick jerk up to the sky and a bridge with Clan Line far away in the distance at the bottom of the shot!

What would we do without good old you tube.
