This months steam railway suggests it's moving to Didcot.

That's where it was but there's been a major reorganisation in the Station Hall and Yard, so don't expect anything to be in its old position.

It's not going to Didcot just yet, and is moving to Shildon soon to take the place of some of the exhibits moved down from there to York of late.

I was under the impression it was off to the Shildon? Not Didcot.

Is 2818 still owned by the Bristol City Council?
Late 60s / early 70s a transport museum was going to be built in Wine Street featuring 2818, a Fox Walker, Peckett and an Avonside. One of the latter pair would be sectioned to show how a steam loco works. Funding fell through though and it never came about.
As Bitton was in it's infancy then, the Council didn't offer it there, so 2818 ended up at the NRM.
Odd thing is I'm told, no 28XX was ever allocated to SPM, so why did the Council acquire one?

2818 has always been part of the National Collection and figured in the BTC collection of Historic Relics to then be loaned to Bristol for display, much as there were to be locos displayed at Leicester and elsewhere. The Council never owned it.

2883, at least, was at SPaM (82B) from October 1960 - March 1961...

Will 2818 be static display only at Didcot? Would seem to make sense, we have plenty of other 28xx/38xxs to run.

It will be when it goes...but it's not going yet. It's having a holiday at Shildon first, and maybe assisting Locomotion in having a bit of a GWR theme for the September event. More to be announced!

Didcot already have a 38xx out of ticket, and enough dead engines already surely. What would it add to Didcot apart from another stuffed locomotive in the running shed.
Sorry to be so down, but I cant see the point in paying good money to transport to Oxfordshire to be honest.

    Great Western.

its an early engine with inside steam pipes as I recall. Interesting (to some of us) to see it and the 2884 side by side.

Thanks for this; back in the 70's it was a council employee who told me they did own it.

2874 (ex-Blaenavon) has inside steam pipes; didn't Didcot express an interest initially when the WSR purchased it?
