Wadebridge carried the Cornish Coat of Arms. Not sure if that is her in the picture but it does look familiar. I never went to Barry. You need to ask someone who did. When she arrived at Plymouth she had an assortment of cladding and I seem to remember some sections were missing. Its such a long time ago now the memory is not what it was.

It looks to me that it could be 34067, some BB's had the badge mounted lower down the casing than most. 34072 had the lower mounting but this was not replicated on restoration, I think 34067 also had the lower mounting in BR service.

If this helps..........I saw 34067 at Eastleigh after withdrawal and the crest had been cut away and a big hole had been left in the casing.

The attached picture shows the loco minus it's nameplate and cabside insignia and the crest having been removed by cutting through the casing

Thanks for posting the photo, however that shows the left hand side, and my Barry photo shows the right. I have posted a cropped version of 340*7 which clearly shows the cut out where the nameplate was removed.

    http://nick301.photos.us.com/p55959367.html

Here is a recent photo of 34007 showingthe shape of the nameplate:

    http://railphotosbycliffjones.fotopic.net/p50749811.html

and here is one of 34067:

    http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/gb...067/interior+detail/Tangmere-Nameplate-01.jpg

Based on the "shield" shape of the hole, I'm pretty sure that my 340*7 is Wadebridge.

You can also see the 'shadow' where the 'Wadebridge' name scroll was on the casing above the hole. So it's definitely a WC in the cropped photo, and I'd say it was 34007.

Nick, the cropped version of your picture leads me to revise my earlier comment. I do agree the shape of the hole matches the WC shield and lines up correctly with the top of the sandbox fillers, also the cabside numbers are not as high up as Tangmere's would be so yes I would now agree that it looks to be 34007 Wadebridge.

Thanks for everyone's comments; my Fotopic gallery had about 200 hits today. I think it's great how we can all get so interested in something that happened 30+ years ago in a rusty siding in South Wales.

they died that others might survive (in other words, until extinction looked imminent, interest in saving some was low. Unfortunately some types were bound to slip through the net, but for Woodhams, we would have lost many more)

Question: have we saved too many to be sustainable into the future?

They were mostly the later Hawksworth ones only a few years old, 5 years or less? Very lucky 9466 survived.

There was a photo in a copy of the Railway Magazine at the time showing 3817 being chopped and I seem to remember the tender went with it.

    9404 was not at Woodhams.
    Don't you mean 9466?

I seem to recall Woodhams may have bought some tender chassis during the 1980s from a steelworks which had used them for some purpose, in order to sell on with locos that didn't have them. Is this correct?

I think that the confusion may have come from the fact that 9466 carries 9404s original boiler and carried the number briefly at one time, possibly for the GW150 at Didcot?
