Well Paul I'm sorry you had your viewing experience ruined but having had some of my photos used without my permission recently I didn't have much choice.
It's one of the risks of having a website I'm afraid, however I do try to keep it as unintrusive as possible while still serving it's purpose.
Keep up your good work I always enjoy looking at your shots.
I'm guessing this was aimed at me Frank, so the obvious answer is if you don't like them then don't look.
Or if it's easier you can send me your IP address and I'll block you from my website!

WJV Anderson tended to use the same angle and compressed perspective in many of his shots and no one complained , indeed this became his trademark . As for copyright , the pictures are there to show but we live in a world where for some there is no respect of such things

It's a shame that Stuart is enduring a run of poor weather at the moment although I reckon the slightly more distant one of 34067 would look superb in black and White

I agree there is nothing wrong with the low angle 3/4 shot used by all the past masters during steam days.Looking through Stuart's website there are some really nice shots especially the last one of 34067.However to use this composition all the time does get a little repetitive there does not seem to be any other composition in your steam section. I think all TBirdFrank was saying is that you need to vary your shots a mixture of what you are already doing and look for other compositions.

I, too, would totally agree with Frank. Variety is the spice of life! By all means, let's have some constructive criticism from other forum members.
I was a little disappointed, however, to read Swiss Toni's reaction, "if you don't like them then don't look", for I feel very strongly that, no matter how good most of us might think that we are as aspiring photographers, invariably we can all improve our standards by listening to, and acting upon, the views of others.
As regards the late Bill Anderson, I was one of those who was privileged to have actually known the gentleman, but will observe that, although he was always seen to be carrying around very expensive photographic equipment (presumably, like Swiss Toni), I did always feel that much of Bill's work, although technically perfect, was also very repetitive.

I'm not wishing to get involved too much in this... however Stuart is taking these photos for his personal use therefore it's up to him how he composes the images. If I'd have had the same kind of feedback then I'd of most likely said something along the same lines... At the end of the day, the images are for his personal use and i'm grateful that he takes the time to post the links. They may consist of the same angle however they are a dam sight better than some of the stuff posted on the internet.

Agreed, Toni can be relied on to get a classic shot where the composition is excellent with perfect focus etc.

Can one of the mods move all of this irrelevant discussion to the Photography forum?

Totally agree. There are far too many photography issues creeping into "whats going on".

You are entitled to your views but there are usually only three ingredients to the specific railtour threads

1 The changes that appear in the lead ups due to the unstisfactory gauging, timing and contractual procedures that rule this business

2 Requests for updates on the day

3 Rushed uploading of "here's my picture of xxx or yyy" in whatever the day provides by way of rain, hail, sun, or snow, often without any regard to whether the result merits public
scrutiny. There are some stunning offerings - and some that show that one's own decision not to go out at all, on some days, was completely correct.

I agree with you, Frank, but only up to a point. I'd say that brief recommendations (positive or negative) belong in "what's going on threads". Longer critical discussions, especially if they start to become generalised (as this one has), would be better carried on in more general threads.

Most posted pictures/video are news-worthy on the day, but don't have much intrinsic merit. In these cases, the sooner they are posted the better.
A few are memorable images to be returned to in future, and are certainly worth viewing even if posted several days after the event. Linesider, Swiss Toni, Dalry Paul and acw71000 are among my personal favourites, but different viewers will prefer different approaches. One soon remembers the names to seek out and to avoid.
Some of the most rewarding posters are those who improve over time. For instance, compare some of David Oldham's (steam1989) early YouTube efforts with what he turns out today.
No image is completely wasted, though a few serve only as bad examples - from which we all can learn. ;-)
