Its 50k to buy and restore them. So were getting them for less than that. And at the price were paying its far cheaper than new ones. And the money goes to restoring clun castle so i really don't mind. They are a business at the end of the day so fair play for making th parts available i say. Cheers anyway. Gav

Just to let you know all six Driving wheels are now machined and the first Axle box has been cast. The other 5 axle boxes will now be cast and machined and then they will all be sent to the south devon railway to be turned into wheel sets. The three plain axles have been ordered along with the tyres. Were looking for more people to sponsor items so we can get the rolling chassis ready for the Steal, steam and stars 3 next year. http://www.lms-patriot.org.uk/sponsorship.html

‎6 Tender springs from the Patriot Project's Fowler tender are now at Llangollen after refurbishment by Owen Springs in Rotherham. These will be taken to Barry to be refitted to the tender that is being refurbished for use with 'The Unknown Warrior'.

All Wheels Secured for 'The Unknown Warrior'

The LMS-Patriot Project is well on the way to completing a 4-6-0 rolling chassis thanks to
the offer of a 3'3½” diameter bogie wheelset from the Churchill 8F Locomotive Group.
'The Unknown Warrior' ...already has the other bogie wheelset from Barry Scrapyard 8F number
48518, and with the offer of the second 8F wheelset, this is the final pair of wheels that are
needed to complete the new build 4-6-0 'Patriot' locomotive. Six new driving wheels have
already been cast and the tender wheelsets survive from the ex Barry Scrapyard 'Fowler'
tender that is being restored at Barry for use with 'The Unknown Warrior'. These wheels will
shortly be leaving Barry for Tyesley where the tyres will be turned and the journals polished.

Mike Hoskin, from the Churchill 8F Group who overhauled ex Turkish 8F number 45160 at
the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway said, "I'm delighted to be able help the Patriot
Project with an 8F wheelset that is needed for 'The Unknown Warrior'. The 8F pony wheels
are identical to those used by the 'Patriots' and we are pleased to be able to assist with the
last wheelset that is needed for the new locomotive".

David Bradshaw, Chairman of The LMS-Patriot Project said, "Thanks to the generous offer
from Mike Hoskin and the Churchill 8F Group, we have now reached another major landmark
and can now proudly say that we now have all the wheels that are needed for 'The Unknown
    Warrior'".

Fundraising continues for the 6’ 3” wheelbase bogie that will be built from new to house the
two ex-8F bogie wheelsets and axle boxes. The aim is to complete the rolling chassis with
driving wheels for Spring 2012, with the bogie truck to be assembled after this, thus
completing the chassis with a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement for 'The Unknown Warrior'.

The LMS-Patriot Project is aiming to build 'The Unknown Warrior' by 2018 - the 100th Anniversary
of the Armistice, and to achieve this is seeking donations, grants, and corporate sponsorship.

A donations and membership form can be downloaded from www.lms-patriot.org.uk, or requested
from:LMS-Patriot Co. Ltd., PO Box 3118, Hixon, Stafford, ST16 9JL, to which donations can also
be sent. A donations and membership form can also be requested by telephoning 01889 271058.
Card donations can also be made at www.lms-patriot.org.uk

Thanks for the update on the Patriot wheelsets; excellent news.

Today is Armed Forces Day. I will collecting for RAFA in my local supermarket but I do hope that the Patriot Team gets as many donations as possible this weekend. It won't be too long before "The Unknown Warrior" becomes a feature of this day and 11 November in its own right.

No real big breaking news on the project, but just a small update on where we are.

We have cast the first axle box an its been machined. The other 5 will now be cast, but with a little extra metal to help with the machining. Our Axles for the driving wheels are at the south devon railway and the tyres have also been ordered, not completely sure where these are but as soon as the driving wheels are all ready they will be sent down south as well. Were still on target to have the wheel sets ready and in the frames to show off at Steal, Steam and Stars 3 at the Llangollen Railway next year. so if you havent already been to Llangollen to see our progress yet this is when to come down. If you would like to be a part of this excelent new build project and Honour our brave armed forces then visit our website for a membership form and standing order form for monthly donors. Thankyou for your continued support.

Not big news. As were working towards the wheelsets, its mainly just ordering those parts. And parts to get the frames ready. Were continuing to visit steam railways at there galas to raise money. (there is a list of events on our website.) I might have a couple of interesting news and pics in 3 weeks. And I promise ill update with both asap.

If you have any questions tho please ask. I'm always interested to talk to people about the project.

    Gavin.

If your indeed aiming to have the rolling chassis complete and on display for the Steal, Steam and Stars 3 gala, then it certainly would be apropriate. A rolling chassis of a new build loco, present at a gala that's raising money for another. Only at Llangollen...

Honestly those people at the Llangollen Railway have everything, except for Corwen, but even that will soon enough be rectified. I'll really have to visit sometime...

Will the Patriot project be bidding for the original Patriot chimney & whistle being offered in next months Sheffield railwayana auction, & if so will they be having a 'whip-round' to raise the funds to bid for these ?

We might be there bidding on the items, with one of our members buying the Whistle and donating it to the project and the Chimney being paid for by the LMS Patriot funds. It might be our plan for the chairman to "sponsor" the cab and then raise money for the smokebox and put the original chimney on top (although a new one will be made for mainline use). Im actually going to save up £1300 to "sponsor" the Smokebox door. Ill update with a picture of the parts as long as we win of course. I really hope people see were bidding and understand its for the loco and back off the bidding but who knows

Gav, can you clarify? You start off by saying "might be...bidding" but then seem to conclude that you will be? (the wife fancies a loco chimney)

'The Unknown Warrior' Nominated for HRA/Steam Railway Award

The LMS-Patriot Project has for the second year in succession been nominated for an HRA/Steam Railway Readers' Award. Issue 392 of Steam Railway Magazine lists the 32 projects that have been nominated by readers of Steam Railway magazine for the 2011 award. A shortlist of the 3 Projects will be formed after SR readers have cast their votes.

The LMS-Patriot Project has been recognised having made significant progress this year with the casting of six new driving wheels, thanks to a pattern loaned by Tyseley Loco Works. The Project has been able to fundraise for the new driving wheels and other components including the tyres, crank axle, axles, and crank pins which will enable the wheelsets to be assembled at the South Devon Railway. This will then allow most of the rolling chassis to be assembled in 2012 at the Llangollen Railway Works, where the frames are currently being assembled.

If you think the The LMS-Patriot Project is worthy of your vote please complete and return the form on page 20 of SR No. 392 (published on August 19th 2011).
