My ideal gala would be like Wolsztyn's...
Where 5-7 steam hauled rail tours arrive in the morning, on charters to a preserved railway gala, the locomotives participate during the day and leave in the evening, giving a very multiple dimensional aspect to the day.
If done over a weekend, different engines could be used on the return each day, and the preserved railway gala would have little in transport costs.
It's probably the closest (and most profitably viable) to a plandampf you could get in the uk.
All that's needed is a servicing location for the charter stock, or use the charter stock for "add on" short distance rail tours from the railway...gives an extra bite at the revenue cherry

My fantasy Bluebell gala would be to have 34059, 34023, 35027 and 33001 together to complete a Bulleid line-up. With a supporting cast of 30120, 31874, 32424 and 31737.

I'd like a gala where you are on a deserted station in the depth of the countryside, sitting on a platform trolley in the sunshine. Occasional block bells from the Signal Box interupt the skylarks singing and from the other end of the Station you can hear a Pannier, on the Fly, leisurely shunting out the Yard . After a while the Officer comes out of his box and tells you that 5054 Earl of Ducie is on the Special, its ten late off the Junction, has a clear road and the crew are really going for it. Whilst you wait, straining to hear the first sounds on the Down Line, an Aberdare comes out of the tunnel on the Up and noisily clatters through the platform opposite before wending its smoky way up the incline and all is still again....just the skylarks and you...

    whens it on I wonder?

A Dean Goods too to complete the line up. If I'd won the £161m I'd have offered to pay to overhaul 2516

You mean other than the dangerously underdressed footplate crew... ?

For me it would have to be be BR standards 2,3T,4(x3),5,6,7(x2),8 & 9, including the couple still under construction, plus the 2-8-2 that isn't...

I wouldn't mind seeing a Maunsell loco themed gala, we have enough classes to make a reasonable lineup. Bluebell, Swanage or MHR, doesn't bother me which one.

For me it would be a grand gathering of all the Class 40's on a line which was not too long and with plently of signalling such as Swanage, GCR or Llangollen.

Its got to be the sole surviving NSR New L class loco. on pasenger down the Churnet Valley with the 0-4-0 battery loco shunting in the yard at Cheddleton. Also the 2 surviving GWR Panniers built by Kerr Stuart at Stoke doing passenger and freight. What a dream!!

I guess a Bulleid one would be great with the amount due to turn up in the next few years.

    35005, 35006, 35009, 35018, 35027, 35028 and maybe 35022.

    34007, 34067, 34072, 34059, 34105, 34101, 34046, 34028, 34070, 34053, 34039, 34081 and maybe 34092

    Thread resurrection time!

    This subject came up whilst I was chatting with a friend recently and it has been interesting to view this thread;

I have thought long and hard about this subject and have come to the conclusion that my ultimate gala would be based around the locomotive exchanges- most of the classes originally used have representatives that survived into preservation (the exceptions being an 01 and unrebuilt MN).

Obviously cost would end up being prohibitive but what a lineup!

    6990 'Witherslack Hall'
Black 5 (45293 in the future being the most similar numbered survivor)
B1 (61306 carries the right livery I think)
West Country (paired with a Stanier tender!)

    46233 'Duchess of Sutherland'
    A4
    6023/4
    46100/115
Maybe a rebuilt merchant could stand in.......35018?

    3803
    '90775'
    An 8f- 48305 maybe?

Maybe with the appearance of one of the preserved dynamometer cars, couple this lineup with a challenging route decent loadings and some enthusiastic handling in such a way that maybe some kind of a comparison could be drawn(thinking FR/WHR super-power type event) what a gala that would make!

    Any thoughts?

    Chris
