Of the 7 preserved Westerns, D1062 Western Courier and D1010 Western Campaigner are both operational, with plans to prepare 1062 for mainline status having been approved by the WLA. I know that the three Westerns who have been operational in the recent past, D1013 Western Ranger, 1015 Western Champion and D1023 Western Fusilier are all undergoing repairs/overhaul with a view to a swift return, all being well, fingers crossed, but was wondering if anyone has news on D1041 Western Prince and D1048 Western Lady. Both the East Lancs/Bury and Midland Railway Centre websites say that these two locos are receiving attention but if anyone would be kind enough to give a more precise idea regarding their current status (and how far they are from being operational), i'd be really interested to read it.

It has moved under its own power - whether it ever hauled passengers is another matter.

D1048 worked on the NYMR when first preserved. Before a grand tour to Southport, Bodmin etc and finishing up back at MR-B. Being worked on by a dedicated few and think it has moved under its own power at Swanwick. It will be done when its done...

Let's hope the engineering team are a bit better at the left/right thing than the website managers, eh…?

Thanks all for the information. With the 50th birthday of the Westerns imminent, it would be super to see as many of the survivors of this iconic class as possible out and about in their golden jubilee year - and for me seven 52s would trump six A4s ;-)

Remember a open day at Plymouth Laira when five were in attendance some time in the 90s dont think there has been a gathering since.

Post #4 in this thread implied either that no target date for a return has been set or if one has been set, it is not for the public domain.
