September will see the retirement from service of the Nene Valleys Polish 0-8-0 tank engine 5485. After giving many years service, her boiler ticket is due to expire.

If my memory serves me right the certificate doesn't expire until later in the month. Until the 'Duke' and 'Kinlet Hall' were announced she was due to appear at the gala. But these days most people don't seem that interested in 'foreign stuff', so shes been knocked back down the pecking order. Its a shame. I would have liked one more chance to snap her at the head of the 'Wagon Lits' carraiges!

I don't think it's so much people not liking foreign stuff but more likely that with two high profile and no doubt expensive visitors, the management will want to make maximum use of them to get their money's worth.

Whats the plan for the 0-8-0, is it scheduled for store or overhaul ? Is anything happening with the BR 64... (please don't say it's going to leave the country !)

I would imagine a lot depends on what arrangement, if any, the owner has with the NVR for an overhaul.

Since posting this gallery I have been informed on another forum that there are details in the latest edition of 'Nene Steam' stating that the boiler ticket for 5485 has been extended to the Summer of 2012. If this is true this is good news for both the owner and the railway, and a credit to the team at Wansford MPD for maintaining the engine to a condition that makes an extension available.

As my copy of NS has yet to arrive though, and there is no information anywhere else on the net, I have been unable to verify the information. If anybody here knows whether its true or not please let me know.

Maybe a phone call to Wansford office would produce the info you require.

The draft notes do indeed state 5485's certificate has been extended to Summer 2012.

I'm certain a year or two ago this loco was advertised for sale online - can't find it now however, so I'm afraid I have no idea what the current status is on this front.

It was offered at least twice for sale on ebay.

Not sure what the current ownership situation is but I think it ended up costing the chap who brought it back from Poland a heck of a lot more than he bargained for.
