I actually like that idea. For instance when the cvr re opens to stoke it could be re numbered to city of stoke on Trent for a week. The cost of the name plates would easily be covered by visitor nos. Other railways could do similar things. I once had an idea for a spotters gala where engines changed nos at the end of each trip. I know some people don't like to see the locos change names but others would and it could bring extra people to the galas. We need ideas to keep people attending. Maybe someone could try it and see how successful it would be.

I think a good idea would be to change the tender crests from early to late versions half way through the BR green running period. It wouldn't be difficult to do.

I agree with that. I think the A1 people are doing the same with 60163.

A lot easier to do with GW engines where you don't have to faff about with painted numbers!

Why not different version on each side as 62005 once had?

Yeah when 60163 returned in Brunswick and the A1 Trust announced it run like it until next year I assumed that it would be 9 months with early crest and 9 months with late crest before reverting back to Apple Green.

Any thoughts on what shed plate it should have on the smokebox door?

I'd go with an oval one? ;)

Wouldn't it be a great idea if the PRCLT set up a phone poll so we could vote on our favourite crest, options could include "early", "late", "one on each side" and, of course, "LMS", just to keep it fair for Rumpole & Co.? ;-)

And then we could have a vote for shedcodes too after that; much more fun than restoring the loco and operating it on the main line...! ;-)

Although I like the idea of green with LMS lettering, that appeals to my sense of the wind-up...

Don't forget, all these polls will be raising money to ensure the Duchess is back and in fine fettle! :)

Quite right! At the end of the day It'll be great to see 6233 back on the main line where she belongs in whatever livery -- Red, Green, Blue or Black -- doing the job she was built for. Far better than being stuffed and mounted like 46235. OK, I admit that it will be fantastic to see her in green again for a while as that is how I remember her as a young 'spotter' back in the early '60s, but for me that's a bonus! Let's be thankful that we will have a Duchess back on the main line once more, and all power to the guys at PRCLT for making this possible. I photgraphed 6233 at Hest Bank in September 1964 being towed by a grimy Black 5 to Scotland to what we all thought would be her final resting place, so to have her back storming Shap and Beatock once more is a dream come true! I think she looks fine in LMS crimson (she would look superb in BR Blue with a rake of 'Blood & Custard' stock!) but hey, come on, she'll be running again, that's the important bit. Roll on next year!

Something like this, then: ÖBB 1020 036? (041?) at Zfl Bludenz, 30 Aug 1987. Only the check-digit for 041 would appear to be correct (unless the ÖBB use a different system).

i cannot wait for the duchess to come back on the main line. she will look lovely in br green. i think everyone should be pleased with whatever colour any steam train it is in, the history of steam is about the design, the nosie and smell in my opinion.

I think the Class 73 Perservence also carries 2 different numbers. 73136 and E 6043. Though the numbers are at opposite cab ends.

IIRC, the nice folk who own Western Champion allow one side of it to be renumbered and renamed on railtours, to whichever of the class you remember most fondly, in return for a generous donation to the loco fund. (Sadly, you can't also have that side repainted in Desert Sand, Golden Ochre or anything else, but it's a start :) )

Now why don't some of the steam loco owners do that too. After the race for the livery, we could have "Pick A Peppercorn", "Cop A Castle", "Build Your Own Bulleid", etc etc.....

I suppose the problem with the steam engine is the front numberplate could be a problem as it would be wrong for one of the sides and some people (not me I must add) would complain. At least with a diesel the number is rarely on the front to cause this problem.
