There must be a strong case now for a period of inactivity in museum conditions to conserve the loco for future generations as an important national asset.

Hawking it up and down the country to all manner of locations cannot be the best way of ensuring its long term future.

I had heard muttering of a possible overhaul for a second ticket after this one, but not seen anything to confirm or deny this.

What are her plans for the rest of the year? Wensleydale October 7/8/9, where else?

The same argument could be said for 4472?? I am sorry, but stuffing and mounting her would just turn her into another exhibit and she is one of the most important within the NRM. A loco with such an incredible history as her's should be out and about so people can see and hear her. She has been well looked after during this ticket, mainly on the GWR where she isn't overly taxed on an appropriate, easily graded former mainline. I hope she is promptly overhauled so many more can learn about her. I am gutted that I missed out on mainline run behind her, I very nearly booked on one of her west of England positioning trips. Perhaps the mainline isn't the place for her, but a preserved line retirement in steam is the least this national treasure deserves.

Whilst I see both sides of the argument, I would personally prefer to see City of Truro remain a roving ambassador in steam for the NRM, so that other locomotives may remain static. City of Truro has been in steam quite a few times in preservation, is in good nick, and has massive double frames which if looked after will last forever, as they're so strong. I'd rather see it steam again and another loco in the NRM stay static. But it is for the NRM to decide, in line with their policies.

I guess overhaul will depend on a partnership agreement with someone and suitable funding. The GWSR is the obvious first choice. I wonder if they have the resources to take it on? Maybe not at the moment, with their landslip problems, but perhaps in a few years time? If so, then we may see her on static display for 2-5 years and then restored for preserved line use. That's my guess, anyway.

I do hope they return her to steam again in the future, I don't mind her spending some time on static display, but she is a firm favourite for many.

As far as I'm concerned, I can't really remember a time when she wasn't around, and I can't really imagine the heritage sector without her.

She has done good sterling work these past few years, and I suspect people will really miss her when she's withdrawn. As the saying goes, you don't miss something till it's gone...

VISIT BY CITY OF TRURO POSTPONED

The Wensleydale Railway is sorry to announce that the world famous “City of Truro” is no longer able to visit the Wensleydale Railway as planned on 8/9 October, as it is necessary for the locomotive to have repairs after its travel through the summer.

Whilst Wensleydale Railway is obviously disappointed, we understand that the National Railway Museum has to look after its locomotives. We look forward to welcoming City of Truro as soon as the repairs have taken place. We will still operate steam on the weekend of 8/9 October, so please do visit us to enjoy autumn in the Yorkshire Dales and travel behind our resident steam locomotive 5643.

With City of Truro's visit to the Wensleydale Railway now postponed, will Truro still be on display at Shildon over the next week or so? I planing on visiting Shildon in the next few days, and it would be great if Truro was there on display.

Yes Chris, we shunted her in tonight. With 5972, 5643, 2818 and Truro on site, there's a good Western presence, though the 56 leave tomorrow to go back to Wensleydale - a super machine, as I had her to drive on Saturday.

Thank you for the quick reply Anthony. It will be great to see these Swindon locos on my first visit to Shildon.

Not sure, maybe 3-6 weeks before departure for repairs, but repaired she will be.
