Add to this some more that will definitely return to steam in the next few years:
    Brighton Atlantic - Beachy Head.
    Patriot - The Unknown Warrior.
    Grange - Betton Grange
Hawksworth County - County of Glamorgan
    Saint - Lady of Quality
    BR Class 6 - Hengist
    BR Class 3 - 82045, 046, 047, 048, 049, 050 (and that's just the start)
    Claud Hamilton
J39 (Oh no it won't, oh yes it will.)
    NER G5
    GER F5
    4115, 5227, 2861 all disguised as a 47xx

    But not:

    Beyer Peacock 2-6-0 "Galloping Alice/Gertie"
    4472 (but 60103 might).

No one mentioned my beloved K1 (62005)!! That will definately be returning to steam shortly following its current overhaul.

Also noted as being absent but will return is 5690 Leander, which is stopped for overhaul at WCRC Carnforth, but amazed how you can miss 60009 Union of South Africa. 60532, Blue Peter is an outside possibility, but think that overhaul would be protracted. 75029 is also returning to steam this week or next with some luck following overhaul.

I think 76017 and 506 aren't too far away, and 499 shouldn't be too far behind.

Directed towards your comment on the 4492 thread...probably because i'm far more interested in decent southern machines over rubbish eastern region ones.... :bounce:

I think personally 499 will be quite a while as she has still yet to steam in preservation. Plus the group are fully focused on 506 which will no doubt take away resources from her sister.

The question was perhaps a touch general...perhaps YoungRailwayMan might like to specify a regional preference?

Although your post was obviously a joke, how does a new build return to steam?

Indeed, perhaps I should have meant that a new member of an extinct class would return to steam! I'm quite serious about most of those on the list by the way. The latest news on Beachy Head on the Bluebell website for example shows just how good the work being done on some of these locomotives is.

Depends what you mean by a few years, and of course the usual provisos must be attached.

The original question was a few years though meaning 3-4 in my eyes. A lot of those are at least 10+ years away at least with the only ones that could be completed within 5 would probably be the G5 and possibly the Atlantic. Perhaps the 3MT, Grange & Saint could make within 10.

The Saint is also called Lady of Legend, not quality.

Depends on the definition of "the next few years". But on the Bluebell, apart from those already mentioned (263, 847, 73082), it is likely that Maunsell Q class 541 will also steam probably within the next 3 years or so; there is also a commitment to start work on SECR O1 65, probably once 263 is outshopped; and there are rumblings that the group that completed Baxter would like to work on P class 27 ("Primrose") with a possible completion date to meet the 100th anniversary of her going to the trenches in WW1, though I suspect that is a long shot.

4079 should make an appearance pretty soon too.

Standard Tank 80078 and BoB 34072 257 Squadron, to be worked on when Sir Keith Park is outshopped.

Depending on what you mean by "next few years" you could include 75079, 828 and 41312. Then looking into the future a bit further, 35005, 34058 and 80150.

The last i heard, the groups idea was to withdraw the J15 for overhaul this year and do a quick turn around for her 100th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the end of eastern steam next year. Whether or not it is possible or not depends on what is needed to be done on the loco after the boiler is removed i guess. Only other option would be an extension but i would have thought they explored this route first.

It has always been said the W.D would wait until the J15 has had her overhaul, so she may be a while off. I don't think she's known as Sturdee anymore either, thought that was just when she was at the MHR in LMR blue?

You mean when it was Gordon mk2 - now there is an engine which wont be appearing soon (which is a shame IMO!!!) However you can add 813 to that list as wont be that long!!!
