Hopefully it's to announce the start of her trials so that she'll be ready for her first currently planned tour with the Cathedrals Express on the 12th Dec.

Reading today's HR a spokeswoman suggested it would be more of a briefing and further stated that the boiler had to be removed in order to access the fractured stretcher and replace with a new one, so it looks to be incomplete at the moment which does'nt surprise me as there seems to be a considerable amount of work to do. A report will be posted on www.heritagerailway.com live news website

Blimey! I didn't know the stretcher and motion bracket were problem areas... it must be a nightmare for the NRM, I just hope they manage to sort it out.

So a late Spring return as mentioned in the statement translates as late May/ early June (late Spring Bank Holiday is usually at the end of May). Fingers crossed they have better luck in sorting her out.

So for all you double chimney smoke deflector haters out there, this is plenty of time to research and redesign the draughting apparatus, and get a new single chimney/ blastpipe made....
Ill chuck a tenner in just to shut you up.

Whatever happened, they disappeared in the early nineties, and Scotsman has not had them in its associated spares as far as I know while in the NRM's possession. I remember it being said in one of the railway mags a few years back that the change was made to improve performance, but that the chimney and blastpipe were damaged whilst being removed, hence the continuation of the double blastpipe and deflectors thereafter.

I seem to remember it being said the single chimney was life expired at that time. Was it new in 1963 or did Doncaster take it from another loco?

Interesting question. By 1963 all of the Gresley Pacifics had double chimneys but the single chimney and blastpipe had to come from somewhere.

I think it is safe to assume that Doncaster still had the relevent patterns in 1963.

In today's Yorkshire Post there are photographs of Steve Davies stood at the buffer beams. The frames appear to still together but by the amount of white lettering on rivets a lot of work seems to have been done/underway in this region. The boiler/firebox are without cladding, but the smoke shields are fitted, the whole resting on a bogied low loader.......can,t remember what they used to call them....

While people are arguing over single or double chimneys it might be worth recording that the man who could have answered many historical questions about Scotsman is no longer with us. George Hinchcliffe, who was with Scotsman on her USA tours, later was MD at Steamtown and pioneered main line steam tours died last week. A good many people said farewill at his Memorial Service yesterday. Sir William McAlpine, in his Tribute address said, categorically "George Hinchcliffe brought Scotsman back from the States. Without him the loco would probably have stayed there". Perhaps a pause from the argument for some quiet reflection may be in order.
