Imagine if Moel Tryfan the Fairlie single 0-6-4 had survived or maybe if a new one was built would it be better
or more powerful that the Fairlie Single Taliesin 0-4-4?

Also would a modern day Moel Tryfan if built today would be useful like taliesin?

They must be related in some way......

I think the OP was refering to the 0-4-4T Single Fairley.

I would have thought that the 0-6-4T was the more powerful engine, certainly it has a larger boiler and six wheels coupled. Having said that, the current Garretts are, by a long way, a great deal more powerful than either, and I'm not at all sure that the original engines on the WHR would be powerful enough to pull the very heavy trains that are the rule on the current WHR train rosters.

    Regards

Remember that Linda & Blanche won Queen of the Hill against the Garratts...

A 13" to the foot, superheated, higher BP, larger-cylindered Moel Tryfan would be more than useful. A Double Fairlie version doubly so. Also note that the current Taliesin (the third loco to carry the name) is slightly larger than the original.

Tal has no problem supplying steam with its smaller boiler so I'm not sure it would be much of an advantage. Also don't forget the extra coupled wheels will mean less weight on each driver which was the point in having them in the first place. Experience with Taliesin shows poor adhesion is a real problem with this type of loco. Reducing the axle weight won't make it better. Higher boiler pressure and bigger cylinders will only exacerbate this as well. We've done this all before with the 8 cars on paper - 6 cars on a good day in reality Taliesin. Not such a good trait for running up steep hills in a forest.

By the time you've redesigned Moel Tryfan to make it useful you'll probably end up with something completely different.

If god forbid someone ever built one, a faithful replica would probably be more of an asset than some beefed up, semi useless, vague nod to the original. Which unfortunately is what Tal ended up as.

Also the original Taliesin wins hands down on looks, especially with small tanks and a half cab.

I realise the emotion regarding Moel Tryfan but I suspect it would be next to useless in every day traffic on the modern WHR. I'm not sure it was all that great on the original WHR - Russell seems to have been preferred. Of course Russell was no use back on the FR 'cos it didn't fit, which is presumably why the old FR glommed on to MT instead. No-one wanted the Baldwin!

I'd suggest the WHHR might want to look at ultimatly building an accurate replica then they'd have the 'set', so to speak. I think they have the bogie frame and a side tank as well?

    That'd count as a restoration then :)

But seriously, once Russelll and the 'new' Baldwin are completed I think it would be a great project for the WHHR.

There's also yet another potential Fairlie to be built in the form of the Fairatt - as a FR loco designer who would quite like to see it built remarked to me the other day, "all it needs is someone to design it, pay for it and build it!".

I think that 0-6-4 looks really handsome, but I think it would make some serious attempts to straighten out some of the curves!

You read wrong. They are still there and earning far more money than they ever did under Moel Tryfan.
