This is a sad state of affairs. The Nene Valley Railway want's to buy the old Station from the J.A. HUTCHINSON & SONS Haulage company next door, owned by a Mr Andrew James Hutchinson but from what I've heard separate from this story is they won't sell it at a reasonable price. Meanwhile it's falling apart. From what I can see its just greed. Anyone come across anything like this?

Yes - all the time - its called getting the best price, or not selling at all if you don't want to. Get over it!

Leaving the building unused is a waste, but owners prerogative.
Hmm, thinking revenue over passion, I wonder how much it would be worth as a bed and breakfast ?

The BBC ran a story on this today, in which they say "Wansford Railway Station, near Peterborough, was closed in 1957 but the adjoining platform is still used by the Nene Valley Railway. The tourist attraction has tried to buy the building without success and it is now threatened by dry rot, collapsed floors and cracks in the facade."

Funny way to maximise its value.

  5. Off topic:
Who is adding the shopping link to the words "Nene Valley Railway"?
    What is "skimwords"?
I think we need to know such links are commercials.
Apologies if already discussed on NP.

Most land owners would hold out for the best possible price. Who can blame them?
From the railway enthusiasts' point of view it's a pity, but unless they can negotiate a better price the best thing to do is to walk away and forget about it - or to give that impression to the owner, at least!

If its a haulage company they're a bad deal away from going to the wall probably , youull get a better price from the administrator if youre patient.

The building is listed grade 2 by English Heritage. I haven't checked the EH 'Buildings at Risk' register yet, but if a local listed building is in a poor condition then the local authority can issue an order to the owner to carry out necessary repairs at the owner's expense. I would imagine such an order might make the owners think again?

About as likely as Hell freezing over. Local Authorities have neither the will nor the funds to start down that road today - especially for a Grade 2 of which there are thousand upon thousand

I'm not sure about that, I live in a group of grade 2 buildings and our Local Listed building department have been very quick to deal with any problems they are made aware of. It certainly wouldn't hurt for someone at the NVR to send them a letter.

Or better still, wait until the building collapses on an unsuspecting passenger.......

The exact circumstances of any 'duty of care' in such an event would be 'interesting' to sort out.

  18. He should stick a load of hot tubs in it - lots of hot water available from next door and an equally limitless supply of hot air from the enthusiast fraternity for drying people off after their ablutions
