ELR unofficial and official now advising 71000 will not feature this weekend - ELR have apparently tried all means/methods of getting the loco back from Peterborough after a short delay caused by a replacement brake valve needed ( supplied by NRM and fitted within 48 hours) - appears that even the sending of 55022 would not have sorted. It is apparently confirmed that the lack of a DBS inspector is the problem, but amazingly can do the move on Monday. Some use.

71000 Duke of Gloucester cannot make it to steam weekend

Due to the logistics of returning 71000 Duke of Gloucester to Bury from the Nene Valley Railway sadly the locomotive will not now feature in the ELR’s October Steam Weekend.

“This is major blow to what we were hoping was going to be a bumper weekend for us and without the ‘Duke’ being present it just won’t be the same” stated Andy Morris, General Manager for the East Lancashire Railway. “The complexities of trying to move steam locomotives on today’s national rail network and seemingly insufficient qualified footplate crews has meant that the loco will not now return to the ELR until next Monday, at the earliest”.

The delayed return of 71000 is particularly frustrating given the Herculean efforts on the part of the loco support group who, with assistance from the National Railway Museum, identified a fault with the loco’s train brake valve, obtained a replacement and had it fitted and tested all within 48 hours.

It is anticipated that the Duke of Gloucester will be resident at the ELR for a number of weeks upon its return.

Anything to do with at least 3 crews being required to move 70000, 4492 and 60163 today?

I wondered that as well. Could they have managed with just one crew on the leading loco with the other two locos just being looked after by the support crews if they were not under power?

    Re: 71000 (NOT)

It's this sort of ineptness from DBS that see's WCRC gain more and more work each year, though i do appreciate 71000 & 60163 are not in a position to use them, this doesn't excuse DBS's inability to serve it's customers.

    Re: 71000 (NOT)

Is the Saturday night Photo-shoot a "turn up and go" ( having paid) event or do you have to pre book in advance to attend?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

ELR Steam Gala 22 October 2011

Only three ex-BR locos made it to this event, as the Duke was stranded in Peterborough yesterday without a crew to bring him home. Star of the show for me was LNWR Super D 0-8-0 No 49395. I had not seen her before, so I took a round trip behind her on this beautiful sunny Autumn Saturday morning. A fine strong locomotive with a surprising turn of speed! I also caught the other two BR locos on their travels.

Had a great afternoon at the ELR today. For me at least, the industrials certainly stole the show, especially in terms of performance - MSC No.32 "Gothenberg" being particularly impressive. The triple-header was fun too!

    Cheers,

    Phil.

I have to admit it struck me as a rake which would've looked spot on behind the black 5! I noticed the same thing at the deltic gala the other week - the green locos sat on blue/greys whilst the blue ones were on maroons! On the plus side, it almost gave the look of an 80s railtour :) Ok, not the Super D itself, but the principle of pre-grouping locos on blue/greys, very 80s, very authentic!
