Or 6030 King Burger (would probably just about get out of a trademark issue), which is what I think was aluded to. Anyway, I digress. Good to see things moving along in the engineering aspect of the project.

How come there is no membership page on your website, only a request asking for funds and help?

Thought there was a membership scheme?

We are currently reworking our membership scheme:-

We are introducing an Annual Membership Subscription from January. Membership from January 2012 requires either an annual fee of £15 or a monthly standing order for a minimum of £5. £15 covers the administration of the membership, 2 newsletters a year and a vote at meetings held during the year. Monthly payments also contribute to the building costs of the project and are therefore vital to the continuance of the project. They will therefore also attract other benefits to be announced shortly. For existing members there will not be any change if they already make a monthly payment or have made a donation in excess of £15 since August. Acknowledgement of previous financial input to the project is being looked into, with a suitable benefit reward package a priority.

Currently we are working on having the option to join on line, which will make life easier for those who would rather follow that route. The sooner that we can get this up and running the happier I will be!!

In the mean time, if you wish to join us either contact Hengist PO Box 660, Swansea SA1 9LU, or if you wish I can send you a current membership form if you PM me with your address.

    Hope this helps

    Bob

Good point folks, we will ask our webmaster to remedy that at his next visit to the site, which will be soon with another update I think. So Hengist Builder got there as I was typing, but my comment still holds to amend the website asap.
Thanks for your interest and support all.

Just to let you know that our website has been hacked into recently so we are carrying out some necessary maintenance to repair the damage caused and hopefully prevent it happening again.
Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.

It has been sorted now, thank goodness!!

    Talking Caprotti Clan ?
(and i dont mean ice cream gangsters !)
As this project is gathering funding for the main frame stretchers, soon it will be a case of making patterns for the cylinders, before that stage is reached what are your opinions on the following:
If the next batch of Clans (LOT 242) had been only delayed, not cancelled, to 1955 onwards chances are that this next batch may have been produced with Caprotti gear.

Avoiding (please) the wider debate of poppet versus piston valves and their infinite permutations of actuating valve gears, if the choice of gear for 72010 boils down to these two only.

    • Which would you choose ?
    • Why would that be ?
    • Would you be more likely to support the project if it went caprotti ? (because its an accepted that the BR Caprotti gear would involve higher costs)

The choice made would effect the character and appeal (?) of the Locomotive :

    Speaking as an outsider:

    - I would choose Walschaert.

    - I would choose it because:

    a) the original Clans had Walschaert - to build a new one with Caprotti would be a 'what if' scenario, which has its merits, but I would prefer 'authenticity' (with the usual caveats attached to the word!)
a1)The visual difference would be significant.
    b) Walschart would be the significantly cheaper option - always worthy of consideration in a project such as this.
b1) Despite the excellent work on 71000 and 73129, Walschaert is I think the more proven of the two, but more importantly there is a much greater understanding of it in the heritage engineering world.
    c) I believe that funding would be easier with Walschaert, as I feel enthusiasts are a fairly conservative (with a very small C) bunch and want new-builds to at least look 'as the originals did'. Just look at the fairly low support for the 5AT to see where I'm coming from.

    - I would not be more likely to support the project if it went Caprotti.

The frame arrangement drawing for the later batch of Clans shows normal cylinders would have been used.

If it isn't too late, I would use whatever valve gear is best suited to mainline running in the 21st century..

-Trumps again Mr Std, but how much work would have been involved in making those alts if Bond had said 'Make them'.

Whilst there is a precedent for BR standards to have the Caprotti gear, it would be a shame to go through all this trouble to produce a 'Clan', only to completely change from the original design. 71000 has shown that while it runs like a sewing machine when things are going well, it tends to spend a long time out of traffic when something goes (I'm referring to the cambox issue a couple of years ago). This is the problem when you have non-standard parts (so far, the only other British Caprotti is the Std. 5 as far as I remember at the moment); unless you have a bottomless pit of money to absorb repair costs, then it makes sense to build the design as originally intended. At least with Walschaerts, you have the potential to benefit from bulk orders. The best thing to do will probably be to build it close to the original, then make tweaks as you go along, as they did to the class with the narrowing of the blastpipe diameter.

Where is 72010 going to be built?

I would love to see the frames built up at Eastliegh next to 35005, the MHR are building a BR1B/C tender which is the same type as this 72010 is to carry, couldn't there be some advantage to both teams if they ordered castings together etc?

Thats a good question and one that will im sure be answered soon.
Looking a long time in the future for a tender i think and also a decision on mainline running, but if thats to be considered then a BR1 C/D isnt a very smart choice.
Think there are at least 4 new build restoration projects for which a suitable BR 1 tender could be required. To which end a really smart new build project would be to build a batch of 4 new BR1F (5600) or 6000 Gallon 'stretch' BR1s for those standards that are mainline runners (70000, 70013, 71000, 740??) and pair the original tenders with these without tenders locos. One imagines that a Standard 5 could go quite a long way on 6000 gallons
