It is my understanding that the funding has been cut for this part of the project - i may be wrong though. It is entirely feasible to cycle from Bakewell to Matlock using green lanes / bridleways; for those that know the area: - Coombs Road out of Bakewell (to Coombs Rd Viaduct), Bridleway towards Bowling Green Farm then Bridleway into Rowsley (ok about 200 metres on the A6) to the former station "concessionary path" to Harrison Way then through the Peak Rail Rowsley South (this might be a bit iffy as you are going through the car park and on another "concessionary path") to Church Lane (near the Church Inn - i'll have a pint) then Church Lane / Four Lane Ends to Darley Bridge (Square and Compass - best try another one) then Gated Road to Oker / Snitterton then into Matlock. Maybe the powers that be consider allowing cyclists to use public footpaths (as they can in Scotland). The link does show typical propaganda

The PDNPA has reported that cyclist usage of the Monsal Trail has increased by 690% - those that bring their own bikes do so by using their car rather than train. I go mountain biking and i personally would like to see trains running on the old MML - whether it be NR or PR i am not really bothered

... well unless they land a Euromillions win or find themselves an oligarch, it amounts to the same thing. It's difficult to believe that the existing set-up would ever make it across the A6 anyway, but right now, even if they did, they're be faced with Sustrans.

Of course, this latest development is entirely in line with the Haddon Estate's original animosity to the Midland, and maybe it offers them the prospect a low impact tenant who would be responsible for maintaining the crumbling cut and cover tunnel?

"responsible for maintaining the crumbling cut and cover tunnel"

You may have hit the nail on the head here!

Quite - I was just trying to put a positive spin on it. Reinstatement of the MML through the Peak is unlikely to happen without the full financial backing of central government.

I'd heard Haddon tunnel is positively dangerous these days.

I am quite a fan of cyclepaths and did the Monsal trail a couple of weeks ago. I have to say it is relatively disappointing. Indeed overall, a better day out could be obtained walking the hills and valleys before the tunnels were opened. As a path it goes from nowhere to nowhere and has relatively poor views - the CHPR is a better bet for a day out.

With a will a cyclepath and a railway could co-exist. However, neither Peak Rail or Sustrans have reputations for management that shows flexibility.

I have to agree about the relatively poor views apart from a few stunning ones e.g. Water Cum Jolly Dale, part of the problem being the low cuttings, however from the elevated position of a railway carriage it would be very different, and give disabled people the opportunity of enjoying it.

One thing I keep hearing is that Haddon are anti-railway, however someone I know who has had dealings with their estates people says they would be happy to have a halt, so who knows?

on a similar yet entirely seperate note on local tunnels, have a look at 28days later forum, there was a foray into the old Cromford and High Peak Burbage tunnel at Buxton earlier in the year, photographs look quite good.

Pete and Me had a day yesterday changing the old wooden pulley stakes over on Rowsley North frame, the LMSCA were getting ready for the NRM coach to be turned so the other side could be worked upon, got a good update from Ben on the work so far, also gave Mr Hinson a hand on the Delacher Van hes on with restoring at present, the sliding door mechanism being refitted now,so that leaves basically one quater end to complete and a section of floor.

Mr Briddon has also been busy with his locos, noted the HST and Class 50 lads also working around their stock on various jobs as was the telecomms lads and Mr Timperley on the narrow gauge, shows what can happen when the weather turns out nice :)

Hi. I was wondering if the locomotive 'Lord Phil' was still at Peak Rail because I remember reading somewhere that he'd been bought in 2008 but I never see any mention of it anywhere. Sorry if this isn't quite in the right section, wasn't sure where to put this.

If memory serves etc.. "Lord Phil" was used on trains during the 'Grand Opening' of the new Matlock station earlier this year.

"Lord Phil" is alive and well at Peak Rail. It was working the service train last Sunday, together with 31 270. I was told that 68 013, the other 0-6-0, has been given a few days rest in the shed to enable some running repairs to be made to it.

    weekly update

Mr Hinson is making good progress with the delacher vans hes restoring, side walls and winter preparations continue, the side doors have been rehung.

The NRM coach has been turned so the other side can now be worked upon.

    S&t

Pete ,Ian and myself worked on Darley point heaters at weekend,as well as changed a worn crank up Rowsley, did some maintenance and replaced some more pulley stakes.

the blockwork for the Luffenham box is nearly complete, some finishing the end wall off is all thats needed then we can get on with lifting the structure itself.

we plan to have another of our work weeks this month to finish the rodding to the front of the box and the lead off timbers as well as other jobs.

    So many dreams.

I seem to recall a similar program was made after the transfer of operations to Darley Dale.

I never really got involved at the Buxton End - but yes there are a lot of people that i recognise, in the 1980's there was a lot of tea drinking and you clearly needed a beard and you could smoke in a mess hut!
