Today, Union Pacific 844 departed Cheyenne, Wyoming for a tour of the States, New Mexico and Arizona. Here is a clip from Greeley, Colorado. The First stop of the Journey.

Excuse Me, I live in the States, where we don't have as much mainline steam action as we did before back in the 80's and 90's. Every once in a while some big trips still occur. Enjoy

And a diesel in the consist with the passenger coaches all at the back, that certainly would not go down well over here.

Also, no opening windows to hang out of for videographers photters and thrill seekers, as far as hooting a lot, note there's no fences and people get to walk over the lines without fear of prosecution.
interesting to see an air greaser/oiler plugged into the engines air lines.

I could listen to that whistle all day long, especially with a master like that "playing" it.
I'm sure on clips of older tours, the whistle, (like quite a few big American engines I believe) was run from the air system, & not so easy to play. but now clearly on steam.

Great stuff and I'm also impressed that the fireman seems to have got a grip on the job with only one instance of black smoke for a short distance. All to often you see shots with black smoke the norm rather that the exception.

Love the clip at Colorado Springs (6.55), there's something really haunting about that hooter, I'll bet it's a good effect at night.

It wouldn't half draw the crowds at Ais Gill!

Only one trouble with those hooters and the similar sounding ones they use on the diesels, they do carry. A few years ago I was on a motor home trip in eastern Canada. Stopped for the night at this small camp site about a mile from a railway. A quite evening with neighbours round the fire pit supping and telling stories, then the freight traffic started, all damn night there was nothing but those mournful hooters echoing round the mountains...:mmph:

Is Steve Lee still steam supremo or has be retired now?

No opening windows??? - but there are half opening stable type doors at the end of each coach - that is window hanging - in style! Domes to watch the loco from above - and if you don't like 844 or 3985 you're dead!

Is it really seventeen years since that run from SLC to Green River? - and they don't mind pacing drivers swapping seats on the same ticket so that you get the best of both worlds!

Colorado - nearest to heaven you'll get - and its not just standard gauge either!

844 had a layover today in Colorado Springs. Tommorow November 1st, Colorado Springs-Pueblo

I think the person that you are referring to is Steve Lee. Steve Retired just last year.

I'm guessing from the runs that you might be talking somewhere in the area of 1989 and 1994

May 1989: 844 ran a trip to Los Angeles for the 50th anniversary of Los Angeles Union Terminal. Day one Cheyenne to Green River
April 1991: 844 and 3985 doubleheader to Sacremento for Railfair 91. Day one Cheyenne to Green River
July 1992: 3985 trip to San Jose NRHS Convention day one Cheyenne to Rock Springs
May 7, 1994: 3985 Cheyenne to Rock Springs

    May 1993 - Denver to Laramie - 3718 (!)

May 1994 SLC to Green Rivewr - 3985

June 1999 - the Railfair burst tube fiasco - saw 844 on the road - then UP stopped everything

    Aug 22/23 2000 - 3985 at Las Vegas and alongside I15

Magic machines - and Colorado - D&RG, C & T, La Veta Pass - must get back there - I even found a guy with a TBird identical to mine linesiding the C&T at Windy Point in 93!

Great Country - but don't talk politics!!!!

I had a bad experience staying in a motel near New Orleans airport a while back - The KCS main line was just behind the motel, with about 4 crossings and all night freights - the novelty soon wore off!! :(
