I know there aren't many Southern Mainline Locomotives out on the main line or on Tourist Railroads in this color right now? It's a little surprising when there are several unrebuilt and rebuilt Bullied Locomotives around. Too many to list. The only one out there is Blackmore Vale at the Bluebell railroad which is out of service and shalll remain that way for quite awhile as I understand. Actually Braunton, Sir Lamiel, Manston, Wadebridge, Tangmere, Clan Line all in BR Green. Can't at least one of them be? Tangmere would look stunning I believe.

This not something that has to be done, it would just be nice.

of the loco's extant in theory 30850 (currently in SR Sage green) 30777 (Br Lined Green ) , 34007 (BR Lined Green) 21C123 Awaiting overhaul at the Bluebell), 34067 (BR lined Green) , 34073 (Unrestored Barry) and 34081 (carried Malachite (Ian hope i'm right) albeit with British Railways on the tender) plus the Schools 925 (In malachite but now under overhaul) 928 (awaiting or just starting overhaul and in Olive Green ) and 30926 (BR Green) .

Braunton and Clan Line are rebuilt examples that only carried BR Green . All the Merchant Navies were rebuilt so either it carries Malachite as a ficticous livery or the lottery win arrives and you de rebuild one
    Similarly 34039, 34027, 34028, 34053, 34058 34059 are all rebuilt

Of course with Unrebuilt Bulleids wouldn't they require the high sided tender to correctly carry that livery if you were going for authenticity?

If i'm right that currently only leaves you with 2. 21C123 & 34081 which i think is going back into BR Malachite when returned to service. 34105 'Swanage' of course also has one but no doubt never carried Malachite being among the final Light pacifics built. What was the last numerical Light Pacific to be given the BR Malachite livery, i assume it was near to 34081?

There is of course also 34051 (ok to remain static), 34070 & 34072 which surely could carry Malachite too?

I'm 99% certain 34090 was the last Bulleid light pacific to be turned out in malachite green on completion in February 1949. Malachite continued to be applied to overhauled Bulleids until July of that year with 34055 being the last to receive it.
No decision has yet been made on the livery of 34081 when she returns to traffic by the way. We'll no doubt have the same arguments this time round as the last but the important thing is to get her up and running again.

Correct Martin. 34081 carried BR malachite from 1998 until 2006. She was turned out in BR dark green in 2007 following firebox repairs.

I for one think it would be amazing to see another spam can carrying southern or Br Malachite livery. Looks spot on on Blackmoor (Blackmore?) Vale, would be great to see it on another, especially on the main line one day!

It would be great to see Blackmoor Vale in steam again full stop. Sadly, it doesn't look like it's going to happen for a while

Hmm...someone's obviously forgetting about Lord Nelson and Cheltenham (soon!). Personally I'd like to see more SR locos in olive, but there we are. BR liveries are the in thing at the moment, and Bulleid Pacifics are obviously constrained by tenders, age etc.

    A Thingy...
Regarding 'Malachiting' the unrebuilt Bulleids, you not only need tender raves, but also casing forward of the outside cylinders, whilst another, less intrusive method of recording speed would be necessary to replace the Smiths recorder visible on the left rear driving axle (this is the one thing that to me prevents 21C123 from being completely representative of the locomotives as originally built). If you really wanted to go the whole hog and have an early production Light Pacific, you'd also need to retro-design the cab front to feature straight spectacle plates, and reduce the width to 8'6". For historical accuracy, this should only be done to locomotives built before mid-1947.

The best chance to see olive green seems to be on the S15s. 825, 828 and 847 have/had it, with, I believe, only 30506 turned out in BR livery.

As built 34001 to 34070 all had 8' 6" cabs so a back conversion of any preserved Flat Top from that batch (34067 excepted) to the earlier style cab would not require a reduction in width.

"Freshwater" in the Isle of Wight sports olive green and looked splendid yesterday at the head of three matching LBSC bogies.(in differing liveries). How rare to see authentic pairings of motive power and carriage stock on a standard gauge tourist line.

And tomorrow B473 (in olive green) will be running with the SECR birdcage and SECR 100 seater also in SR olive green. 1638 and the Maunsell set is another common pairing on the Bluebell, and official policy is to work towards appropriate combinations of loco and rolling stock liveries, though we are still a good few years short of that ideal.

I always preferred to see a bulleid in Malachite Green with British Railways written on the tender. Only four members of the class ever run with the lion over the wheel emblem on the tender in Malachite Green.

Taking this very slightly off topic, i sometimes think that Malachite would have been a better choice for BR to have chose instead of the GW loco green for express passenger locos even with the GW style of lining out . Ialways think that the dark green as chosen is far to drab
