The works scenes are all Swindon - the 94XX is being cut in 'C' shop.

Love to know what the Castle is. See it has the early type curved inside cylinder casing so at a guess I would say 4079 being restored for preservation, so would be after the infamous May the 9th 1964 run. Can't see any other Castles being repaired in 1964, especially an early one.
PS. Don't think 4079 received works attention prior to the 1964 run, it was used in trials along with other Castles on the Worcester line.

4073 went in 1961 and 4003 was already in Swindon museum.

There are pictures of 4079 in steam in Swindon in April 1964, and another website shows no castles in works in August 1964, But early series class 14's under construction, and 4079 was on display in Southall in 1965...
Maybe 4079 was overhauled there in late 1964 early 1965 ?

This picture is early 1965, at Swindon shed fresh in preservation, but doesn't look in steam...

A number of early Castles survived into 1964; 4079/80/2(as7013)/8/9/93 for instances - perhaps one of them could have been in works at the same time as the D95XXs were being built?

Apart from 4079 I think all the others here had their inside cylinder casings modified to the square type. Particually 4080/4088/4093 which had double chimneys. 4082 was a 70xx series anyway as you say. Not sure about 4089 which was a Reading engine at the time & usually on station pilot duties at Reading.

No I do not currently volunteer
On a similar although only loosely connected point the book GWR 4-6-0's at work (by Rutherford) sugggests that 4073 had a double chimney fitted in 1959, if this was the case I assume it was removed (I know she is single now) when she was restored to go to museum, when did she arrive at the Science Museum?

4079 was repaired at Swindon A Shop after the may 1964 run and condemnation by BR.

Presumably the repair was part of the purchase price agreed with M Higson.

The repair included repainting in GW livery (carried out in the same shop) before running a few trips in 1965.

The work was carried out in about the position shown on the photos.

Some years later 4588 (then ex Barry) was also repaired in A Shop before transfer to the Dart Valley.

I don't think 4073 ever had a double chimney, will try to look up & confirm.

I have a paperback book somewhere about 4079's initial overhaul & preservation showing pictures of the overhaul at Swindon. Not sure where to lay my hands on it though.
I sure 4079 was stored on Westbury shed for a while though before purchase.
