as far as I am aware none of the examples of branch lines given actually offer the opportunity to have a destination on three different lines from the junction using a heritage train, as Horsted Keynes would (North: Kingscote, East Grindstead, South: Sheffield Park, West: Ardingly). The NYMR at Grosmont could offer that if NYMR trains went towards Battersby. The GCR could offer that at Grosmont with trains on the Montsorrel branch.

So I correct my statement, the Bluebell Railway will be unique in having a fully operational branch line, along with railways such as Bodmin, Blaenavon, Ecclesbourne and Mountsorrel (on the GCR.)

As much as I like the NYMR though, I don't personally count it, as I speak of lines that are totally owned and run by heritage railways.

 

OK well how about the Churnet valley. From Leekbrook Junction (with a triangle in the centre) North to Leek, East to cauldon, West to stoke, and South to Froghall/Alton. And a 5 mile climb of 1 in 40 to 1 in 55.

 

I'd much rather the Bluebell not only cleared the rubbish trip, but got the full infrastructure to East Grinstead operational with a new timetable for the whole line up from Sheffield Park. Before even thinking about anything else.

I strongly suspect they probably will do that! LOL!

 

how about the Dean Forest? Ive never been able to get my head round their layout but dont they have a low level and high station which may qualify as a branch?

Another 3 week dig at the tip started today.

 

...a dig which should see the majority of the planned waste removal completed.

The latest NEP update distributed round the railway says, in part:

which as I understand it says that the current dig should remove most of what is required, but there may be a need for a few more trains next year depending on an assessment of exactly what is still left after WBR5.

Incidentally, assuming WBR5 runs as planned, about 87,000 tons of rubbish (as well as over 20,000 tons of sandstone rubble) will have been shifted from the tip by the end of this year.

OK, the note that was posted round the railway is now up on the website, so I guess this is public domain now

You can read the full update but in essence it says:

- WBR 5 is happening now (3 weeks, 15,000 tons). That will be the last digging work on the tip this year; there will be some remedial tidying up but essentially winter weather means no more can happen until next year. Any residual trains that are required will run next year,

- Next year from March, remodelling of track and S&T at Kingscote will take place. (The track work is essentially laying in a more gentle point at the north end of KC that is shallow enough that it can be taken line speed. The surveying work for this took place a few weeks ago). Once done, that enables the S&T to do their work on signalling the KC-EG section. Initially this will be controlled from the existing south signal box - commissioning the north box (ex-Brighton Goods) will take place later.

- The cutting and any residual waste in it will then be profiled, stabilised, drainage laid in etc, and it is planned to have track connected in August / September 2012.

- Once track is laid, the clay capping, which is currently piled up either side of the cutting can then be removed south. This will have to happen before a regular train service can commence.

The update doesn't say, but of course it should be taken as read, that further funding is still required if that timetable is to be met!
