STEAM TRAIN - SUNDAY 20TH NOVEMBER

On Sunday 20th November we are running an extra steam train service to that originally advertised in our timetable.

We are welcoming GWR 2-8-0T Heavy Freight locomotive No 4247 for a short stay with us and it will be operating our trains on the 20th, running to Timetable A with a first departure at 11am.

GWR 4247 looking superb in its' black livery at Bitton this evening. I understand that the loco has recently been overhauled
at the Bodmin and Wenford Railway. Feel free to correct me if necessary. The loco faces Oldland (Bristol). <BJ>

I believe it was overhauled at the Flour Mill, Forest of Dean after the T9 left the works.

4247 has indeed been overhauled at The Flour Mill. After a short period of running-in at Bitton, the loco will be returning home to the Bodmin & Wenford Railway - road transport is booked for 22 November. Following further running in at Bodmin, 4247 will re-join the BWR steam fleet and is the rostered loco for the line's Santa by Steam trains.

That sounds about right. 4247 will haul service trains at the AVR on 20th November.

The loco was warming through nicely this afternoon in preparation for tests during the coming week. <BJ>

4247 passed its boiler exam today so will be handling the passenger services on Sunday at the Avon Valley Railway. Normal timetable A and fares apply.

I concur. I know there's a lot of talk about liveries etc and I'm a fan of GWR green but these big 2-8-0Ts just look great in BR black. I have a soft spot for 4247 as I have a few shares in it. Shame I haven't seen it for a while but good to see it sporting this livery for a change.

The 42 looked very shiny this morning on the back of a low loader heading southbound on the M5...

I think the P&DSR should out-shop one of their 2-8-0Ts in black. Seeing as they have 2, it would be good for variety (could then pair it with 7827 while she is still black!!)
