Class 02 and 06 at Liverpool Road

The Liverpool Road railway at MOSI Manchester yesterday took delivery of unique Andrew Barclay built class 06 No. 06003 and Yorkshire Engine Co. Class 02 No. D2868. These are the first ex BR locos to be based at the site since "Black 5" 44806 departed in 1993.

Both these locos are kindly on loan from HNRC and can be seen on display during museum opening hours- 10am-5pm every day.

So E27001 wasn't owned by BR or operated on the Woodhead route then?

 

in the answer is in the quote "These are the first ex BR locos to be based at the site since "Black 5" 44806 departed in 1993" E27001 OR 1505 Ariadne arrived in 1986 hence why MEJ states since the departure of 44806 IN 1993! Simple really!!!

 

Does anyone know how long the MOSI intend to keep the 06 & 02?

 

I can I just ask why they are there. With the limited display space available it seems a bit odd to have a pair of locos which not wishing to be too cruel, are not that interesting or relevant to the museum.

class 02s worked in the salford/manchester area (inc salford goods yard), some of the class may of even been to liverpool rd station (MOSI) when it was in use as a goods yard.
the class 06 has a gardner engine in it which were built in patricroft, manchester.
it is hoped with the help of hnrc to get both locomotives working, so that they can give rides and shunt the museums wagons. to show how the site was when it was a goods yard. both locomotives are on loan from hnrc.

I think these are very much a right fit for the museum, a Duchess or 47 just wouldn't look right here.
There's not many 02s about and only 1 06... If they were based on a long preserved line they would almost never be used... So here is a good chance to show them off.

 

But doesn't MOSI try to stick with "local" manufacturers?

I remember seeing the O6s at Dundee and Markinch in the 70's. And it's always good to see some "Yorkshire" technology creeping west of the Pennines.

I think Newton Heath had an 07 in the mid sixties, but I might be mistaken.

Newton Heath certainly had a "Yorkshire Horse" in the 1960's before the advent of classifying locos. Skew Bridge sidings/ Thorpe Road works were shunted by it.

I'm saddened that one of the largest recent discussions in the Diesel/Electric area has morphed into the repatriation/condition/policy/history of a fleet of steam locos!

Back at MOSI, the museum gained one extra visitor this week when I went to see the 02 & 06, enjoying several of the other exhibitions (not all railway related) in the process. I think it is commendable that the new arrivals have been stabled in a sensible place for viewing. The 02 looked very appropriate on its small rake of wagons, you could even get "that picture with a difference" by composing the Beetham Tower in the background!

most of the time the beetham tower gets in the way, plus when the wind gets up you can hear it !!!

 

I was having more trouble with the smaller, brick built buildings to the south of the site. I went on a sunny lunchtime to get a nice picture of the shunters but found that at this time of year the sun does not rise high enough in the sky to shine over the buildings onto the wheels of the locos.

Not something MOSI can do anything about of course! If the 02/06 are still outside in March I shall be back to claim a sunny view of them :smile:

 

Slightly old news now but a quick search on youtube may find a video of one of the new arrivals in action.
