Second serious incident with this most precious rake of coaches (The first being when then K1 ran into them at Pickering a couple of years ago). Combined with comments Ian Riley has mad in the past about their husbandry of his Locos. it makes you wonder just how careful some of this railway's staff are with precious and irreplaceable Locomotives and rolling stock.

One and a half coaches thorough the bufferstops is not a minor misjudgement!

I can't comment on the incident per se but I can say that an LNERCA Gresley coach has sustained some damage - we don't know for sure how serious it is yet but having seen some photos we are hopeful that repairs will be reasonably straightforward and the coach will be back in traffic next summer.

Now that is a real stupid addition to this thread, you must be from some other railway that was not chosen. Or maybe just an empty vessel.

No, just someone who is tired of the amount of others peoples property the NYMR has managed to damage by poor attitudes and carelessness!

Now that is a bit strong and OTT.

All we know is what HAS happened. What we dont know is HOW it happened.

It could just be an accident and unfortunatly these things happen (like it or not) on a working railway

Many people are asking, "How did it happen?"
I do not know anything about the 'incident'. But I guess it was the result of one of two things:-

1. Something broke
2. Someone messed up

However; history of nearly 200 years of railways, has taught some of us, that any accident or 'incident' is the sum total of a number of contributory factors. Any one of them would have probably not caused much alarm. But a number of little factors adding up in just the wrong (or right) order leads to the accident or 'incident'.

Then - yet again - can we ask for honesty.

I know that language has to be measured to avoid issues of liability etc, but this is the time when an official announcement should be made by the NYMR to silence the rumour mill. I have used the epithet about sulking silently in a corner on another thread.

It is equally apposite here.

No way, you would not believe how long the list of incidents leading to damage is on this Railway over the last 5 years!

Would it be worth locking this thread down until such a point that there is some real news from the NYMR?

Once again I think we are entering ground that is only going to cause unrest, and lead to suggestions/conclusions being brought forward that really are not helpful? All that this thread has told us is that yes there has been some damage, and that everyone wants to blame something or someone, how about we get the facts first?

Posting this as a private individual, I too think that this thread would be better locked or removed, and the investigation left to the professionals. Speculation only hinders their work. I would say that of any railway accident, regardless of whether I was involved with that organisation, or not.

In the meantime, it is a matter for the NYMR, NR & the RAIB.

Whilst rampant speculation is unhelpful, we have not seen that yet. A news forum that locks down every time something happens is neither use nor ornament.

Why when something unfortunate happens does it bring out the best in some people!! - lets stick to facts & wait until the cause is found & an official report is issued. Fortunatly no one was injured & the carriage can be repaired.

Unfortunately such a mindset is a trap and is why acceptance that "its just an accident and these things happen" is the barrier to proper investigation, identification of the root causes, implemetation of the measures necessary to prevent reoccurence and monitoring of their effectiveness.

In the real world outside our hobby such investigative discipline to situations like this has been the accepted practice in improving safety for some time now.

Can we get over the idea and acceptance that "accidents just happen" - if we don't incidents will certainly continue to happen!

A quick google search turned this up, no idea if it is fully factual but it does sound a bad incident.

"Yesterday afternoon the NYMR had an accident with 3 Mk1 carriages running
away at Grosmont from Platform 2, running into Siding 2 and colliding with 2
LNER Gresley teak carriages. The force of the collision was such that the 2
Gresley teak carriages have been forced through the buffer stop and into the
parapet walls of a bridge ending up just over a metre from going into the
River Esk. The wreckage of the collision is fouling the Network Rail Whitby
branch line. Passengers are currently being conveyed between Grosmont and
Whitby in a bus replacement service adding approximately 30mins to the
journey time.

The damage caused is the buffer stop completely demolished, the bridge
parapets extensively damaged, the Gresley Brake Third Open carriage (43567)
has major body damage and major underframe damage effectively writing it
off, the other Gresley teak carriage has major damage and the 3 Mk1's have
varying degrees of various damage sustained to them.

The Whitby branch line is still closed and a heavy rail crane was dispatched
from Knottingley hauled by 66099 to the site to help clear the wreckage from
the line."
