When I visited the railway in September the viewing platform at Dolgoch was closed. Is there a date for its re-opening?

    Regards

The viewing platform is open, as normal, and will be in 2012.

The track renewal work has progressed well during the last week and is well on target for completion in time for the Santa and Christmas services to run.

The track relaying has progressed very well in the unusually warm weather that has been seen in Tywyn. The track should be reconnected to the layout at Wharf Station on Monday 21 November, which will enable reballasting and vertical alignment work to be undertaken next weekend. Much work still remains to be done and the drainage work will begin after the Christmas services have run.

Compared to opening or extending a new line, building a new loco or returning one to steam the relaying of such a length of track and improving the drainage is relative "unsexy" and unlikely to make the headlines.

Muy understanding was that TR management were originally sceptical that the work could be done between the end of the season and start of the usual Santa trains but were persuaded otherwise. With that in mind completing so that santa trains can be run will almost be my narrow gauge moment of the year as it a great reminder of what the whole preservation movement is and was originally about in my view, and that is that committed volunteers can achieve much against the odds and that much of the work required to run or maintain a railway is not glamorous and for personal gain.

Is this link really necessary Andrew? It's got nothing to do with the TR. Start your own thread about TV shows the WHR/FR appear in.

Apologies. I rashly thought that a link to a programme about committed volunteers rebuilding a railway would be of interest to railway enthusiasts.

You already posted it on the WHR/FR thread, so why would you post it on the TR thread?
Or were you planning to post it on every thread on here since "a programme about committed volunteers rebuilding a railway would be of interest to railway enthusiasts."?

Sorry, I seem to have mistaken this for a forum for people who are interested in railways. Apologies to all those who clearly aren't.

No need to be so hard on yourself Andrew, I'm sure your actions were well intentioned but just mis-directed. A lesson for next time perhaps.

Back to the TR's engineering work, I'm confident there might be another update from 'VolCoordinator' on progress over the weekend.

Indeed there is, the weather was kind for 3 days and work progressed well, unfortunately today, Monday, it rained most of the day and thus progress was not as good as had been hoped, with the closure rails still to do, the rain meant that darkness fell some 30 minutes earlier then normal for the time of year, preventing the work being completed.

Its not glamorous work, but is typical of the tasks that are necessary to maintain any Preserved Railway. If they are not undertaken then any Railway will find itself unable to run trains.

It was not Management that were secptical, but the original programme that indicated the work would not be done for the Christmas services, a review of the amount of excavation required and rescheduling of some activities together with the determination of the Volunteers has enabled the Christmas services to run.

Work has proceeded again over the last 3 days with the closure rails being measured, cut and connected on Friday giving a complete Railway again. However later the same day 4 lengths at Pendre were taken up to enable some regrading and drainage work to be undertaken, the dig was completed Sunday morning and two lengths reinstated. More work is planned on Monday after which the gang will take a break until Friday morning when work will recommence.

To be honest I am not interested in wether or not you can join online, its getting volunteers to undertake the numerous projects the Talyllyn is undertaking thats my core activity.
Suggest you email the Membership Secretaries and talk to them about it.
There will be a further update on the various projects next week, when the Talyllyn will start its preparations for the Christmas services, bringing an end to the current engineering possession.
