I like the way that both of these trains run without a diesel in the formation. Both trains being DBS and proving that it can be done on a premier main line. And before anyone asks I am talking about Paddington to Maindee.

Had a great day at Shrewsbury. Bit windy up on the castle but the rain held off luckily. Just locos and support coaches were turned on the triangle and at one point the King was arriving from the Yard into P4 just as Tornado was heading round the bend from Abbey Junction! Also saw a Royal 67 so not a bad day!

Tornado was late getting away from Shrewsbury due to braking problems.

http://campainr.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=143574406 Tornado prepares for departure from P7 at 17.05 . The end of a cracking day.

Rolled into Bristol Parkway at 21.00. Several alighted, and not just the punters.

Saw both at Shrewsbury this evening, a lot of blowing off in the station which I feel could have been avoided with correct boiler management. My partner described the coaches 6024 had as being "hideous" and that if she were to pay to go on a train she wouldn't want it to look like that. 60163s coaches were however very nice.

5 people on the footplate of 6024 when it left (3 DBS crew, 1 support crew and someone with a camera. I was under the impression that only 4 were allowed? Certainly looked as though the fireman was having some trouble with all those people up there!

What a ridiculous comment. I'm sure you would be much better at managing the boiler when you're already running behind time with 13 on and with no idea when you'll get the road. No doubt today's firemen would love you to lecture them on "correct boiler management" after a day firing on the mainline.

My videos of the two steamers today as one of the Royal 67s plus some brake down crane action. Looks like the 67 had the best stock...

It's not unusual to find steamers sitting in Shrewsbury station blowing off whilst waiting to depart, especially if they're being held back after their booked departure time. Once clear of Sutton Bridge Junction they go onto a fairly good climb out of the town, which is generally up hill for the next 7 miles or so (not sure what it does beyond that), so it's understandable they'd want to be setting off with a reasonable fire.

I was further down the line this evening, but I understand the train was only meant to be pausing in the station for 5 minutes before heading south, so I guess the fire would already have been built up ready for the climb before their arrival in the station, but if they were then held for any period of time and delayed...

Whilst they spent a frustrating hour in the goods loop at Craven Arms waiting for the chap from Notwork Rail to turn up to clip points so they could depart, it didn't blow-off once.

Firing methods and handbags aside! A great spectacle ensued on the north bound Llanvihangel leg with a very credible 41 mph over the summit, a king doing what a King does best. On the return at Hereford, they took on water and had some concerns with a feed pipe to the atomiser which did set them beck for a late departure, however listening to them depart and climb away I think they had a very strong intention to make some time back. Well done team 6024.

I think the platform in the first clip is Ashley Hill, Horfield platform is a bit further up near Bonnington Walk.

If only 4 were allowed, how would they manage if they needed a pilotman.?
