The main line connection and signalling are already there. The line is just mothballed, not disconnected. Like I have said before, on Network Rails sectional appendix of 2006, it shows the line as complete from Stoke to Cauldon.

One Point that seems to be overlooked is that the MCR will be charged by the CVR for running rights over the CVR rails when they run to Alton Towers or anywhere south of Leekbrook.

True enough, but it and the associated signalling will need to be thoroughly refurbished of course.

Is that bi-directional.. is CVR paying MCR for trips to Cauldon Low ?

The signalling at Stoke should not need refurbishing as like with Buxton depot, the depot has not seen a loco in years since it closed and the connecting points were part plain lined a few years back, so no movements can be made onto the depot, yet the signals that control movements onto and off the depot are still there and active, these are still maintained and checked every few months by Network Rail, even though the likelyhood of them ever being used again, is pretty much zero.

I dont think the mainline connection itself is an issue, more problematic might be the removal of the avoiding line through Stoke station - unless an extra crossover was installed at the same time, there's no way for trains from the Leek line to reach the Down line south of the station which is hardly ideal.

As long as it is listed on ELIPSE then it will come up for 4/13/52 weekly exams. With the line being mothballed it wont have been removed so there will have been maintenance over the last however many years.

    Kenneth,
it is not a case of not wanting one, it is a matter of cost. From the Nexus website regarding a funding announcement in 2010 : "£230 million will support Metro’s running and maintenance costs over the next nine years"

Like I said there are other returns on the 200k such as the infrastructure upgrades which have/will have saved the CVR tens of thousands. Plus all the future benefits already mentioned (such as free Stoke running and an extension to Leek, which has been the core aim of CVR since the Froghall extension ten years ago).

I'm some how confused now, Chris is saying 44767 is hauling every Santa train, and P/wayman is saying 5199 is hauling these dates: 17th& 18th Dec.

Can some one comfirm what is running on the 17th& 18th Dec, if its 5199 then great stuff, need some winter photos before she leaves!!

    Ta.

Chris being on the MPD knows better than myself whats running. I was just repeating something I had been told. At least it is on standby so who knows you might get your photos.

I think Chris was giving a correction to the previous suggestion. ie 44767 will be running every weekend.

I took a few shots of 44767 at the weekend, if anyone is interested;- Churnet Valley Railway - All about George.

Most likely! Just got me thinking, as I heard that 5199 will be running the 17th & 18th Dec by someone, ah well! Just hope 5199 has a run about before leaving CVR! :D

    Nice shots by the way!!

Yeah. 5199 did a real good job. Not my cup of tea being honest as I prefer something more 'local' but have to admit it did well. Shortly to be painted BR black I believe.

Aye thats right, will be painted into BR Un-lined black at Llan. I do have to agree, I do like something 'local'. Fingers crossed she'll run before leaving, maybe at the Feb gala? or another date? unless the rumours are true, that shes leaving before the gala in Feb...

I didn't say that 44767 was running all the Santas. I said that the intention was to use 44767 as much as possible during its stay. This was simply passing on my understanding following conversations with steam crew volunteers.

44767 has hauled all the Santas so far with 5199 performing some carriage warming.

Chris, I think he meant Chris Meadowcroft, who posted on Galas and Events page.
