The Churnet Valley Railway will be holding a Steam Gala on Saturday the 25[SUP]th[/SUP] and Sunday the 26[SUP]th[/SUP] of February 2012.

The locomotives running during the gala subject to availability will include:

Visiting Black 5 No. 45379 courtesy of the Mid Hants Railway.

Black 5 No. 44767 George Stephenson.

USATC S160 No. 6046 making its debut in preservation and also its debut in the UK, this will be the first opportunity to see and ride behind this locomotive.

Large Prairie No. 5199 making is final appearance before returning to the Llangollen Railway following a 3-year visit to the CVR.

Plus an additional visiting locomotive that we should be able to announce shortly.

There will be an intensive passenger service in operation that will feature the 27 mile round trip from Froghall – Cauldon Lowe – Froghall. For anyone that has not ridden on the line to Cauldon Lowe this offers the chance to hear and see the locomotives working hard as the gradients on this 8 mile section of line range from 1 in 40 – 1 in 61.

Other features during the gala weekend will include:

Double headed Black 5's to Cauldon Lowe,
The run round loop at Cauldon Lowe should be commissioned, if unavailable trains will be top and tailed to Cauldon Lowe,
The freight train will do two round trips per day from Froghall Junction to Leekbrook,
Locomotive Workshop and Carriage shed open for visits.

Further information including ticket prices and timetable including locomotive diagrams will be released in the New Year.

Very much a choice between this and the KWVR gala a couple of weekends before.

I know the CVR line along the canal and very picturesque it is too. I don't know the line up to Cauldon Low, but from photos I've seen it's very overgrown with trees, shrubs and bracken. Are there any decent photo spots on this length of line or are the attractions really for the riding fraternity?

    Regards

During the gala, I noticed that there were plenty of photographers out on the moorland/farmland sections beyond Leekbrook.

For Orion, (soz messed up the quote lol)

There are plenty of shots on the Cauldon Lowe line, the line follows the Leek to Ashbourne road (A523).

Bridge 4 on the Leek to Cheddleton road is a good shot, as the trains powers over the bridge (Side on shot) leekbrook - Google Maps

Bradnop Bridge 9: bradnop - Google Maps

Between Bradnop & Apesford is this land, its a public footpath off the main road: bradnop - Google Maps

Apesford Crossing: bradnop - Google Maps

Beaver Hall/Threshing Barn: bradnop - Google Maps

Ipstones (B5053 road): bradnop - Google Maps

Blackbrook (Ellastone Road for Mellow Lane): bradnop - Google Maps

Winkhill (Ellastone Road): bradnop - Google Maps

Quite the contrary, the Cauldon Lowe line, in my opinion, has more photo opportunities than the CVR line. Whilst the first three miles out from Leekbrook to Bradnop is indeed very wooded, for the next 3 or 4 miles the line runs through open moorland with many sections available to photographers. If you study an OS map of the routes, you can see how the CVR line runs through farmland with footpaths and public roads proving scarce. The Cauldon Lowe line however is crawling with foot crossings and other ways for photographers to get close to the trains. The other advantage is that the line is much higher up than the CVR line down in the valley, so during these winter galas you stand more of a chance with the sun, we all know that problem when a garden shed casts a 100ft shadow over the line!

I have hopefully attached a selection of my images (diesel biased - sorry!) taken last year to show some of the (in my opinion) better spots along the line, that are unspoilt by shrubs/bracken etc.

I'm more than happy to explain where these spots are to anyone who fancies a go at them, my advice from doing snowy diesels up there last November would be to seriously wrap up :)

Any light hearted predictions/wishes for the "visitor yet to be announced" from anyone?

For me it would have to be something different in an older livery, such as Caledonian 828 or the N2 tank.

I'd like to see a Jubilee, a Brit or even a GWR King. none of which have been to the CVR.

As 42968 had to be withdrawn from the reopening Gala, I wonder whether it might make a belated appearance. Other than that, I'd quite like to see the black Brit or perhaps a hall. That would give a nice opportunity for a bit of a "Rainhill trial" between the Hall and the Five?

How about something completely original for a bit of fun, like 71515 'Mech Navvies' from the PBR, or 'Whiston' from Foxfield? They would (and do!) sound and look awesome blasting uphill, and would at least be capable of working through to Leekbrook, as well as providing a small(er) loco for driver for a fiver! I thought 'Ring Haw' was an excellent performer at the February 2009 gala; it would be nice to see something similar happen again!

An austerity as a dedicated banker on the gradients? Sounds good :)

No chance of the Q6, I think - it's suposed to be having work on its axleboxes and driving wheels retyred this winter.

How about something GWR to balance the LMS feel of the gala, say 7822 Foxcote Manor or one of the 2-8-0 Heavy Freights! I do have to agree tho on 828 too, looks such a lovely loco! Oh and The LNWR Coal tank... :p

i personally would love to bring 2857 into contact with that 1 in 40 at some point. The Churchward Express would make a great sound powering up there! I think she's unlikely to take a holiday from the SVR in the very near future though. I think the same can be said for 828. as far as I am aware it will be staying on the valley until the spring gala at the end of March, before moving to Llangollen for SSS3 and then home to scotland.
