No I do not currently volunteer
I think the point being made was the loco is not what is need for the railway as it looks to develop over the next years which is true when they get to broadway i have not doubt that passenger numbers will increase making a 060 tank unsuitable for the loadings the railway will have and not meeting the expectation of the visitors for something big a green.

Depends on the engine - the railway doesn't really have any major gradients so a 57xx will more than cope with the increased loading tbh - 7 or 8 coaches would be no trouble on the railway for such an engine tbh.

King George isn't a 57xx though, is it? And I'm not talking appearance here!

Indeed I agree and wasn't suggesting it was. My point was just because a 15" Hunslet isn't suitable for the railway that doesn't mean that all 0-6-0 tanks aren't hence my example of a 57xx.
As for appearence who knows if the thomas bubble bursts then maybe Didcot will replace the side tanks with a set of panniers lol!!!

If the Thomas bubble bursts perhaps there will be a whole new series about King George the hunslet and his friends -

    King Edward (his bigger brother)
    Legendary Lady (King Edward's 'friend')
Burton Agnes, the tough speaking northerner
Cookham, so concerned about footplate breakfasts he never looks where he's going
Trojan and Ajax, the cheeky Welsh non-identical twins
Pendennis, the Cornish traveller who's been round the world and can never seem to get the dust out of his joints?

Oh and of course Bonnie Prince Charlie, King George's NEMESIS (or best friend, depends which George and which Charlie we're on about!).

Without getting into an Industrial v Mainline debate, in the future the Glos Warks will require motive power capable of running Cheltenham - Broadway with load 6/7 and running at a constant 25MPH, would King George of been capable of this ?, i know some Industrials definetly have the power to shift these loads, but they were intended for slow speeds and shunting and 25MPH can be 'lively' on one, i remember not long ago seeing an Austerity going about 25 on a line up north, to say it looked like a bucking bronco is an understatement.

"Pendennis, the Cornish traveller who's been round the world and can never seem to get the dust out of his joints?"

I did laugh when I saw this!

We have been trying to do this for the last ten years! You still, on rare occasion pick a bit out of storage to clean up and put back on which has a suspiciously coloured dusty look about it! Buckets of the stuff came off her when the project started.

The trouble with this now is that I can't seem to shake the picture out of my head of 4079 with a big grey Thomas type face and wearing a bush hat with a row of corks on strings around the brim! I need a lie down...

How about adding to your characters, Shannon, the wise old man of 81E, always ready to advise the young whipper - snappers about how things were done back in HIS day?

Or what about about Buster the Railcar and his father R.M. who are never quite sure of whether they are coming or going?

Finally, we could have Wickham, who fills a pet sort of niche just like a faithful little Jack Russell terrier!

    All the Best!

Perhaps there are still some loco owners who can't bear the thought of them being turned into a Thomas:baby:, at any price! I accept the commercial realities in this case but nevertheless it is a horrible thing to do to a saddle-tank.

Believe me, there are far worse things you can turn a saddle tank into than a Thonas engine, and given the rise in scrap metal prices how long before one does end up cut up, because the owner cant, or wont restore it and the scrap merchants make an offer he cant refuse?, or worse still the owner dies and the family wants to realise the value after all ex mainline locos often will find an owner, how many ex industrial locos can be assured of the same ?

Indeed so, I think in the upcoming tough times the UK Austerity population is probably set to decline as well as a few other "industrials". It is a shame that King George is being converted but it is better than rotting in a siding on the GWR because they (quite rightly) are focusing on their PW problems.

Out of interest when will KG arrive at Didcot I would quite like to have a look before she (/he?) becomes "King" Thomas!

Surely, King Georege would be the nemesis of Bonnie Prince Charlie, not the other way about?

It is already at Didcot, minus it's boiler.
