There is another treat for Bulleid fans in the new issue of Heritage Railway out today. It has a free poster with a great shot of 35017 (35028) working the VSOE through the Surrey Hills on one side with a Flying Pig on the SVR on the other. There is also a rather a good shot of 35017 on the cover taken by a Mr Donn Benn...............

Regarding 34092's overhaul, has anyone heard anything about the suggestion in this thread in another-another place (eighth post down on The LNER Encyclopedia • Hornby 2012 Range & other culinary delights!) that they are planning to fit a screw reverser in place of the Bulleid steam reverser, allegedly in an effort to reduce coal consumption (I was originally scanning for further details on the 2012 Hornby Range a couple of days ago)?

I've been told by one of my spy's that 35009 Shaw Savill has been put up for sale again by Ian. There is also a for sale notice on his web site. Anyone going to buy a Bulleid?

He couldnt sell it before, and i would wait for someone connected with IR to conferm it, that web site is quite old ,so i wouldnd take it as being fact if he has, what does that mean for 35018, assuming he is the new owner ?
This engine(35018) is far more complete than 35009 and would i assume be a far better engine to restore

I've seen that website before, and it's waaaaay out of date. I doubt Ian would sell it now, certainly considering that I believe he's already started some small jobs on it. Besides, even if he decided not to restore, why sell it, when you could use it as a spare of kit parts for his other (possible) Merchant. Although I hope that isn't the case.

Personally, I don't think Ian Riley is one to back out of a project once he's dicided to do it.

When Mr. Riley decides to do something, you can be pretty sure that it's going to happen, and at quite a pace too...!

Also, he might as well restore it and bulk-order parts whilst he works on 35027 to keep the costs down. As has been mentioned, that website has not changed for ages, so if that's where the rumour came from, I'd ignore it until something more concrete emerges. The one thing that's clogging things up at Bury at the moment is 60103, so we'll know more when that's gone.

I think the works can deal with more than 1 loco at a time.
They aren't just working on 4472..

No, but the prolonged saga of 60103 probably has had an adverse effect on potential output of late as regards the B12. I'm happy to be corrected on this, though.

Actually, Ian recently said that 4472 doesn't affect the other overhauls, in response to an insinuation in one of the magazines.
B12 setbacks haven't been due to 4472, they missed an ideal slot early last year, due to lack of resources, (see website) so had to wait a while for Riley to have time to get round to it again.

The works is a busy place, but no loco really takes precedence. Its all down to the resources and ca$h available

That's good to hear. If one believes the railway press, then one would easily get the impression that the world has stopped in order for 60103 to be completed. I'm a bit sick of it myself. Next thing, they'll be reporting which rivets have been attached to the locomotive in the scrabble for news. Why not just let it progress and argue about it once its out of the works and earning its keep for the next overhaul? Locomotives NEVER pay for their restoration, but they do generally pay for their next visit to the works. Its about time the press took this into account.

I have a couple of books by J. Scott-Morgan, one of which is a pictorial record of the Q1 class in its entirety. Can't really fault the attempt to publish a monograph on a single, esoteric locomotive design; but I did feel there was something lacking, probably as a result of this.

Blimey! There's another one to look for. I don't know about the Bulleid title but the Book about the GWR King's has had good reviews.
Haynes have a few promising railway titles coming out this year and in 2013. Here are some of the titles listed on Amazon:
Steam Locomotive Driver's Manual: The Step-By-Step Guide to Preparing, Firing and Driving: Amazon.co.uk: Andrew Charman: 9781844259427: Books
Flying Scotsman Manual: An Insight into Maintaining, Operating and Restoring the Legendary Steam Locomotive (Owners Workshop Manual): Amazon.co.uk: Philip Atkins: 9781844257065: Books
The Rise and Fall of British Railways: Goods & Freight (Rise & Fall of British Railway): Amazon.co.uk: John Vaughan: 9780857330239: Books

The Flying Scotsman one looks like it'll be in the same style as the Tornado one.

I may look out for this Bulleid book as the one I have is very good but sadly all pictures (Including the ones that were recent at the time in preservation) were all black and white.

I'd be interested in a Bulleid Owner's Manual (Early marks w/chain-driven valve gear)... In fact, a book with a series of diagrams detailing every part would bring something rather new to the Bulleid party.

I'd say it looks like one of the cranks that connects the action of the steam reverser mechanism to the valve gear behind the main driving axle (left hand side if the lever is anything to go by). From the look of it, it's from 257 Squadron. If not, then your guess is as good as mine...
