    This is just my opinion. Considering that speed on the Fort William to Mallaig line is not nearly as fast and the distance between the two towns is not even 50 miles you could have 2 amateurs in the cab with supervision each way. Engines like the Black 5's are perfect for amateurs since they are so numerous on tourist lines, branch lines and the mainline too. The line to Whitby may be another good place.

    Why does the fact they are numerous make them perfect for amateurs? Is it becase, if they break one, there are plenty of others to replace it?

    Are you kidding? Where did you think that up? Its more a matter of transferring the skills and knowing how to run in different settings.
