    Re: A4 line up

Very true, but at the very least I'd like people to just stop and think for a moment about whether this is really the best way to spend their money.
williamfj2, you make a very valid point. Since more than one Bulleid pacific has been on the market and struggled to find a buyer in recent years, perhaps we could ask the Canadians if they would be prepared to swap one for 60010? (I doubt the Americans will ever let go of 60008 because of the Eisenhower connection.) If British enthusiasts are more willing to spend money on brining A4s home than restoring "yet another Bulleid", then surely it's a move that would make sense; and the Canadians would get a very interesting replacement British exhibit, so they couldn't complain...

    So it's official then.......
Let's see how much it will cost and how quickly industry will part with cash to make it happen.

Most excellent news - well done to Steve Davies and all involved at the NRM for making this happen.

I will most certainly part with some hard earned cash to see that!!!!!

    Re: A4 line up

    Copied and pasted from Steam Railway's Facebook announcement;

    Fresh from the NRM:

NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM TO REPATRIATE A4s FROM US AND CANADA
The National Railway Museum can today confirm that a formal agreement has been reached with transatlantic colleagues to temporarily repatriate two A4 class locomotives to play a part in the celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of Mallard’s world record breaking 126mph run down Stoke Bank on 3 July 1938.
Exporail, the Canadian National Railway Museum in Montreal, has agreed to release 60008 Dominion of Canada, and the National Railroad Museum, Green Bay, Wisconsin, will release 60010 Dwight D Eisenhower. Both locomotives will be loaned to the National Railway Museum for two years.
Steve Davies, Director of the National Railway Museum, said: “I am delighted that the two museums involved have shared in the National Railway Museum’s vision to make this happen and I have no doubt that what is being planned will be beneficial to all parties.”
The two locomotives concerned will be a central feature of a series of events being planned to mark this historic anniversary and full details of these events are still to be finalised. Discussions with the owners of the privately owned UK based locomotives are being conducted in order to generate a number of line up opportunities involving all six A4s at a number of locations, of which York will be the principal venue.
The movement of the locomotives is currently being planned with the intention of drawing on direct industry sponsorship for much of the activity involved. It is hoped that both locomotives will be moved in autumn 2012.

Well in view of the general finances of UK PLC and closer to home, the huge costs involved with several, high profile loco restorations, fund raising is some what difficult just now, I can say this with personal experience. I would love to see the six A4's as it will certainly be a once in a life time but we just have to understand the huge costs in not just the shipping but removal, preparation and then eventual repatriation.

I suppose we will also get the "the money would be better off spent returning xxxxxxxx to steam but anyhow, not lacking positive thinking, just being realistic!

Remember........A pessimist is an experienced optimist!

So thats great news for UK enthusiasts & the steam movement , Don t think I will be able to see the line up in person -- so what will we get in return, to the far flung reaches of the empire !!! --- maybe 35005 Canadian Pacific --- over to you .........

As far as I'm concerned you can have anything and all that was built by the GWR and on permanent loan too. :)

Ah , so all we will get is the cast off s -- LOL , still would accept a County , but the lads at Didcot are still working at it --maybe ask them to move it up a bit .. In all honesty the A4 in Delson Que will look great back in the Uk , in fact it s closer to you, than it is to me here in western Canada .........

Surely if that was to happen it would have to be an NRM locomotive in return as the agreement is after all with them, so we can keep 35005 here where she belongs!

Oh darn , was hoping you wouldn't notice a small fact like that -- I just like Merchants and that one in particular, as it has a Canadian connection & I've worked for Canadian Pacific in the past-- oh well back to the woods .........
