    Re: York triangle threat?

Time for York City Council and the press to become involved. David Morgan and the HRA - step forward.

Public pressure dealt with the ticket barrier issue. Political pressure allied to the tourist industry in York will soon dispose of these buffoons.

If the worst came to the worst could a development within a triangle, with human supervision of opening gates across an entranceway, not deal with the one off situation of a loco making a crossing at walking pace. Network Rail's statutory duty is to run a railway, not to disable it, and not to diminish it from what was handed over from the BRBV on 1/4/1994 where there are valid objections.

If the triangle is to be removed there should certainly be some compensation to the operators involved to facilitate new turning facilities. Ideally a turntable, but how many sufficiently large tables are left that would be suitable for restoration?

Add to that a second railtour as does happen frequently.
Also the original purpose of the triangle was to turn On Track Plant such as Tampers etc
Has this happened in recent times? Some of the machines are a lot longer than they used to be and probably would not fit on a Turntable.

If needbe you could always get one from abroad, a german 80 footer for example could turn just about anything that runs in Britain.

I see DBS have also now rejected to its removal, pointing out the lack of detail regarding the proposed alternative and how it would work in practice - see here (.pdf)

Presumably Network Rail will be forced to reconsider...

    Re: York triangle threat?

Network Rail have pulled a blinder there. Pretty half-baked proposal as it stands. Now I've had a chance to think about it, how on earth is a Museum going be expected to provide a service that Network Rail should provide at all times of day, all week, every week? Half the exhibits would probably have to go elsewhere to ensure that shunting would be kept to a minimum. And considering the current economic climate, is it truly realistic for Network Rail to expect the NRM to have a fully operational outdoor turntable up and running at any time in the next two years? If they have to build this thing, then why not, as has already been intimated, build over the track to create a tunnel? As for road access to the inside of the triangle, surely some sort of working arrangement could be made for when the track is used (flagmen, traffic lights, etc.)? DB Schenker's reply is a refreshing dose of common sense.

Yet one more reason for the tour industry to have access to Network Rail at high level to try to inject joined up thinking into one of the most dysfunctional operations in the UK

    Re: York triangle threat?

Have NR proposed using the NRM turntable without consulting the NRM or is the NRM in favour of using the Great Hall? Would seem an incredible decision from the NRM to allow it to be used in the first place. The amount of hassle to their visitors and staff would be extreme, especially considering that DBS would wish to use it free of charge.

It looks like work has already started onsite - has the triangle been take out of use already?

    Re: York triangle threat?

The 'work' is actually an archaeological survey of the site - not, in this case, another Viking antiquity but the former North Midland shed and double-round house, of which, from what I could see, when turning 5972 last week, the pits and turntable pit looked remarkably well preserved, having been buried by rubble, since the buildings were demolished in the 1960s.

As far as the Network Change is concerned, both DBS and ourselves have now met with NR; the change cannot go ahead until our (and any other beneficiaries of the triangle - the use was somewhat underestimated) reasonable expectations have been adequately addressed.

I suppose that it's typical that Network Rail just did not appreciate how much the triangle is being used..

    Re: York triangle threat?

I don't know an awful lot about the liaison between the TOCs and NR when organising paths for special trains, but surely at least the LE movement to and from the triangle will appear on WTT and thus provide a record of the facility's use? Seems odd the use was 'underestimated'. (unless of course the access is from adacent sidings and thus in a no-block area?)

More likely the right hand of NR not knowing what the left hand is doing..

They have seen pound signs from the property potential - it was always thus - particularly from 1994 to 2001 when Railrtrack really was a property orientated outfit.

At least Network Rail pretend they are interested in the network
