More footage from my second static camera at Shap summit . I had to use sound from the other camera as this had no sound . Not perfect but you get the idea. Steve 44871 & 45407 The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express 28-1-12. - YouTube

Got to say chaps that the footage and stills from this tour are probably the most stirring I have seen in the annuls of preservation history. Absolutely astounding. Thank you to all involved, be it behind the lens, on the footplates or behind the scenes. :clap2::first:

Steve that is another great shot, but you have now let the cat out of the bag, we know that the still people have been doctoring their shots for years, now you have admitted that we videoers do it as well......

I'm going to be checking all your vids from now on, Ralph :ear: - if I spot a 'Hall' sounding like a Black 5, there'll be trouble. :yell:

Some smashing fots/vids on here, well done to you all. One of the best ever sights on Shap for a long time I imagine, got some of my best shots yesterday I think, they are located in a set here:

Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express - a set on Flickr

The smoke on Shap in particular was immense, some really brilliant effects, hung in the air for a very long time after the train passed.

Thanks to all involved,my dad had a great day on board also. Looked a great trip, hopefully this fixture will continue next year, seems to have been a great success this year.

    Cheers,
    Mark

Wow! What a collection of great shots.

I know I said I wasn't going to drive all that way, but I changed my mind at 3pm on Friday, and I'm really glad I did. I won't post my shots of Bay Horse nor Shap Wells because they won't add anything to Smithy's great clips. Instead, I've posted an alternative view of the last few miles to Ais Gill, taken from the east side of Mallerstang Common. Thanks to Nick Lera and, a generation later, Linesider for the inspiration to climb up that high. It does need a big screen, though. I'd recommend 30" minimum...

Alright, I admit it, the sound of the train crossing Birkett Common under the shots of the sun setting behind Ais Gill have been borrowed from a different shot that didn't make the YouTube version, but the huntsman's horn under the shots of the distant snow-covered fells is absolutely un-enhanced.

Really pleased you changed your mind, another absolute belter, and from that viewpoint you can clearly see the bank of freezing fog that settled in the valley.

I have to admit I was getting a bit bored with "black 5's" last year but these two really were something else. [IMG]

Here is my video offering from the day: Black 5s on the Cumbrian Mountain Express 28/1/2012 - YouTube

The first shot was taken at Shap Well, on the hill beside the hotel. Unfortunately the camera decided to end the film short, but I recently found out this was due to my current memory card not being able to write the data quick enough. I now have another card on order that can cope with large amounts of data! The second shot is nothing of particular interest, a head on shot of the 2 5's at Ais Gill summit.

All in all a great day out with Dave Oldham and Ryan Skinner. Well worth the 5am wake up call and a long drive up from Wiltshire!!!

What a superb selection of shots and videos posted, from what was an awesome spectacle on Saturday.

Its just one of the days when you admire the effort for all that goes into keeping steam on the mainline to not only tempt people to travel from far and wide to witness such a spectacle, but to also hear people who travelled on the train to describe it as one of their best ever trips. A nice touch also with the chaulked reporting numbers on the front of 44871.

Please see my shot of the pair attacking the climb up to Ais Gill on the return

Mark that is a great shot and I hate to admit it but I remember it like that, from the early 50s.
