She never normally has to work hard enough to bark very loud, but 4965 is right up there when asked, anyone who remembers the first Vintage Trains Lickey Banker where 4965 was banked by 7760 will testify to that when Rood Ashton was given the lot halfway up the bank.

A couple of my favourites for sound was firstly Cromwell working it's way out Leeds Station a couple of year's ago on the SSE. We were about the 7th coach back and the noise the exhaust made on the climb was just something to behold. Secondly was 33001 on the Bluebell. A much missed favourite loco of mine since it's now gone back to the NRM, but the unique exhaust beat that the Q1 had was just ear catching. I remember a Branch Line gala we had around 1998 and we were expecting 75027 to come along with the service train but when we heard the exhaust of the loco climbing Freshfield Bank, even before the loco had come into sight, immidiately told us a change had been made and it was the Q1. How I wish 33001 would be brought back to the Bluebell and returned to steam!:pray2:

Not the most vocal on starting, but the peculiar 'roar' that the Jubilees produce working at speed is worth a mention.
Will we ever get to know what 73129 sounds like at 75mph ?

Had a superb run behind 5690 in 1978. The sound as she got away from Wennington and tackled the climb through Clapham was tremendous. One of the best on board recordings I've made.

Funny how you sometimes get a loud engine within a class - i.e. same class, but louder than its classmates. An example of this for me would be 44871 - seems much louder that 45407, and gives 5690 a run for her money too.

46229 was of course, when driven with gusto, very loud, especially for a double chimney loco.

Tornado has her moments, but only when the regulator is in the roof; otherwise she seems fairly quiet. Same for 46115.

Of course, all that sound represents wasted energy and lower efficiency ...

The most "vocal" in my experience have been 5029, 6024, 70013, 73096 and 92203.

Had a few runs with 5029 to the Westcountry and she was very vocal on these. On one occasion when she was doubleheading with 5051 to Plymouth, 5051 was failed with a hot box and 5029 had to soldier-on on her own for the return run. What a sound from 5029 as the crew got the maximum effort out of her! The lasting memory I have of 6024 is from a run she did from Didcot to the WSR. She was checked by a signal on the run up Savernake bank. The sound as she was opened up again was very stirring as it echoed off the surrounding trees. 70013 is always very vocal and has to be my favourite sound on the ML now that 73096 has "retired". Ah, 73096. Always very vocal both on the MHR and the ML. One of the highlights of travelling on the MHR's Daylight Railtours was the occasional tender first running from Guildford back to Alton. Being in the first carriage behind 73096 when she was hauling a load of ten or eleven up the long bank out of Guildford was heaven! Happy days................ Anyway here she is on Whiteball in the hands of the Late, Great Bryan Dudley-Ward who always got the best out of her:73096 climbs Whiteball with BDW in charge - YouTube
A wonderful clip from B1 and one of my favourites on YT.

Finally 92203 really was very vocal when she was on the stone trains in Merehead Quarry in 2008 :92203 Black Prince on 1000t Stone Trains - YouTube

USATC 5197 put up a pretty good display too.

Only two mentions of 5051? My favourite Castle and I think a serious contender for 'bark'!

45231 is my favourite Black 5 for sound; you can always hear her for miles away whether you're in the West Highlands or on the S&C.
