Ok that is to grab interest on the steam side but is the truth, it had a boiler and a water scoop 5P5F 1A shedplates; what appeal does this project have to the steam community, this is perhaps the most significant gap in UK preservation this side of a 'Jenny Lind'? 4 Engineers and a former Chair of the MRT can't be wrong, please donate to the engine appeal LMS10000 or any smaller donors from this side of the steam/diesel divide would be gratefully received, along with your views. Full donors will be able to meet the team and see the progress at ELR on March 3rd. I am writing on this side of the divide because this is surely interesting to some(if not all) of you?

I'd suggest that your post might generate more interest if you were less cryptic. Most people won't know what you are talking about.

Ok, sorry. There is a proposal on the Diesel side to recreate LMS 10000 which was a masterpiece of post war engineering built for comparative trials with 'Sir William Stanier' in 1947. A vintage identical Power Unit is sourced and an Appeal is underway. Bogies, and much internal componentry is sourced. The Mark 1 Power Unit is now a museum piec in it's own right, the English Electric pioneer modified much over the years and still in use today, from the staart to the ending of British built Diesel power. Th e equivalent of a boiler already in place(and wheels available), this is a unique way of producing a design icon at a fraction of the cost of a new build steam loco. We are trying to gauge interest to see if we should attend steam rallies, also.

That's a much more understandable post. Personally, I think it is a worthwhile project. The niggle I have is that it won't be a recreation of 10000 as such but a hybrid bodyshell lookalike, with a similar engine, similar transmission, similar bogies and similar control system.

They will for sure have to make some pragmatic compromises, I guess that will not suit the rivet counters but at the end of the day if it looks and sounds like LMS 10000, then thats OK by me :)

But then Tornado was never intended as a replica - it is supposed to be the 'next in line' with suitable upgrades based on the originals' performance/problems.

LMS 10000 is being billed as a recreation/replica, so in theory it should be the same as the original!

    Quite so!

Not a steam subject, but to tidy up this thread it is worth repeating the website url for this project: http://lms10000.org

I believe the original poster's intent was that by putting it into the steam traction section he might tap into a viable market for a locomotive from the very earliest days of main line UK diesel traction, from a time when it was to all intents and purposes a steam operated railway. As an 80/20 steam to diesel enthusiast, I can see where he's coming from. The idea of an LMS 10000 does interest me.

"that is to grab interest on the steam side but is the truth"

I think steam enthusiasts know what a diesel looks and sounds like.
it may have been better put "as it really is", but either way...

If it looks like, sounds like, pulls like and runs like a 10000 then it probably is a 10000.
Theres 2 potentially similar locomotives for sale in Australia, which could offer similar cab and electrical equipment, and all probability will go for scrap.. Whilst it is a long journey to Oz to strip the good bits... It's a lot shorter than the journey to recreate them.

Either which way.. I've not seen one, and wouldnt mind to.
    best of luck.

Call it a replica from the beginning, then you can use some original parts and other from more modern sources. Happens in the replica car market, friend had a replica 'D' Type Jaguar, there were parts from an original 'D' but also stuff from more modern models. In the end it looked and sounded like a 'D', but actually went better with modern suspension and brakes.

If it looks right and sounds right, which is perfectly achievable, then im all for it - it will certainly 'fit in' on preserved lines a lot more easily than more modern traction. Would look great on the SVR's LMS set :)

Well I'm pleased to see that I'm not the only person who considers that a "Jenny Lind" would be a worthwhile new-build project...

Will the LNWR bloomer at Tyseley more or less fill the Jenny Lind gap as a standard gauge inside cylinder 2-2-2?
