I recall clambering down the bank and going into a shed at Bodmin General, I believe sometime in late '60s, and seeing at least one GWR tank.

I believe, correct me if i,m wrong, that this was part of what was to become the GWS that is now based at Didcot.

Now have trawlled 'tinternet to find out more info of what happened and or what was happening at Bodmin in the late 60's
but have come to a dead end.

Any advice/help would be gratefully received.

    Ta much

I did exactly the same in 1971.'Twas 1363 and an industrial saddletank. Can't remember which one, though. An early outbase of the GWS before Didcot evolved.

Wasn't Taplow anothe base, with 61XX,14XX and 66XX and with 7808 at Aschurch, along with (4)6201 and a couple of other items of stock?

    6697 was at Ashchurch with 7808. I think the Taplow 3 were 6106, 1466 & 6998.

The industrial was Bagnall 2962 'Devonport Dockyard No 19', currently on hire to Pontypool & Blaenavon. Also present would have been Hawksworth Brake Composite No 7372, now at Didcot and Churchward 'Toplight' Brake No 2434, currently at the B&WR awaiting restoration.
There was an entrance to the shed (since demolished in BR days and replaced in B&WR ownership) down a long stairway from Harleigh Road.

6998 and 1466 were at Totnes Quay until they both went directly to Didcot in 1968, they may have visited Taplow but were never based there.

Come on,fess up - did you go behind 1363 down to Bodmin Road, or up to Boscarne and even Wenford, when no-one was looking?

The "fifty-year rule". When I paid my 15/6s or whatever it was to join the GWS in nineteen sixty something I was told that signing the application form bound you by the "Official Secrets( GWS Special Provisions 1965) Act". Apparently this little-known legislation was rushed through parliament during a late night sitting, or was it a lock in? Anyway, all transactions and affairs of the GWS were to be kept secret for 50 years. Transgressors would be hauled before a tribunal comprised of GWS elders and sentences would be served in the bottom of the water tower at Didcot...... Could this have been a wind up?

Most of what happened at Bodmin in GWS days was recorded in the GWS magazine the "Great Western Echo", so if you can find an archive of this material you will be enlightened. Maybe Didcot can assist.
