Would the CVR be interested in an LMS coach agreement then?

Once the LMSCA has completed their EVR agreement, we will be looking for a follow up. Probably 18 to 24 months.

Several coaches exist at Rowsley, in an as yet to be restored condition, awaiting an operating opportunity.

Just need the contract and the fundraising to progress? We need to recover the VAT to make it viable.

Is this practical?

J H-T is an LMSCA, EVR and "Unknown Warrior" member. (Probably others as well).

Potentially there is opportunity to develop links between a number of existing LMS related groups, to enhance the progress of a variety of projects that are complimentary to each other.

At the LMSCA we look forward to encouraging these relationships into the future.

There is an obso on the CVR already. Once a contract has been formally agreed etc it will be used on the CVR. As for coaches, yes we could do with a few more, but at the moment we have enough for the services we run and tbh where are we going to stick any more if we were to get some?

Once the yard gets redeveloped though, and the runround at Cheddleton gets re-installed then we should have a bit more space but neither of these plans are going through in the immediate future.

 

David Smith collected a number of LMS coaches in the '80s but none were ever restored, and I think that he's subsequently sold most, if not all , of them to the LMSCA.

Thanks for this Gavin. The Trustees of the LMSCA have received a number of emails and phone calls as a result of posts in this thread and as I was mentioned by name they have been refered to me, as a fairly active member of the LMSCA.

I have been ask to make it clear that the LMSCA is firmly based at restoration bases at Rowsley (Peak Rail) and Wirksworth (Ecclesbourne Valley Railway) and is restoring coaches for use on those two lines. There are no plans to restore coaches for other Heritage Railways. The other project (at Rowsley) is to restore the NRM's Period 1 Coach to a very high standard, a project that has been ongoing for a number of years.

The current project at Wirksworth is to complete the LMS Period 3 Open 3rd launched into traffic for the opening of the EVR extension to Duffield. Tables are being manufactured and fitted, and blinds are being made. When both are complete the coach will receive it's final coats of paint, lining and varnish.

The next project will be the LMS Porthole Brake 3rd and some work has already been done on it.

I would point out that both Peak Rail and The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway are ex Midland Railway / LMS lines and the the EVR, at 9 miles is also one of the longer Heritage Railways.

The LMSCA will have a stand and the LMS Weekend at the NRM September 24th-25th. If you are there please come to the stand and find out more about our work.

I would also mention that the LMS Patriot Group will be at The Llangollen Gala next weekend and there will probably be the opportunity to view progress on "The Unknown Warrior."

42859 is truely one of the lost locos of preservation. I believe that it is still at Binbrook in a dismantled state looking very unloved. It is surely time for a group to get together to restore it.

Finally I would like to say that many of us are very passionate about the work we do on Heritage Railways and that we also like to speculate about future possibilities! However it can be dangerous to speculate about restoration groups' future plans! As a moderator on another Forum I would make a plea to everyone to think carefully before making posts to save heartache for deeply committed people!

I have a dream as well and all three of the groups concerned know about it: To see "The Unknown Warrior" hauling a rake of LMSCA restored LMS Coaches up the Ecclesbourne Valley in 2019 if not before. I will certainly do all I can to help achieve it!

Not to sound rude but you could say please/thank you when asking....

Plus when people have answered your continual questions you don't seem to acknowledge the answers with a thanks or anything.... you seem to post the once then that's it.

It is at R.A.F Binbrook which is in Lincolnshire unless things have changed.

This question seems to keep getting asked every so often, contributors to this forum keep answering, often with photo links to show a depressing scene of a dismantled loco stored out in the open. Still at least we have the return of the East Lanc's Railways Crab to look forward to in the near future. They could do an LMS maroon gala too when it returns, with the 8F and if they are quick with Lizzie 6201 in the line up.

Whether anyone with very deep pockets has offered to buy 42859 and been refused, or whether there just isn't the money around now for such a project we will probably never know.
This engine was always rumoured to have a poor firebox, and years of outdoor storage clearly will have done the dismantled parts no favours at all.

Could be a useful Heritage line engine rather than "mainline", so who knows, maybe on day? Highly doubtful at present I suspect.

I have been told that the East Lancs did make an offer to restore the engine. It has always been reported as having a poor firebox. Some years ago a container of spares was broken into and many parts were stolen, this was reported in Steam Railway at the time.

Rumour had it,it's owner used to frequent the forum, and was a vocal character at the time.

If it's at an RAF base and it's container broken in to... How secure is an RAF base ?

I believe the container was broken into at Hull Dairycotes depot shortly before the loco was moved to Binbrook.

Remember said alleged Crab owner on here. Ruffled a great many feathers with prophases of doom and tales of mismanagement. Upset a lot of people but 99% of the time he was spot on and sometimes six months later he would be proved absolutely right. Shame he was driven out as he was one of the most interesting contributors to this forum ever.

Funny he posted on here that the Royal Scot overhaul was heading for melt down and disaster long, long before anything hit the news-stands or internet forums and he got abused and shouted at. Errrr where is it now? Several other high profile engines on here had similar stories told about them and the work carried out on them and each one of them failed spectacularly afterwards.

Sad loss to NP when he went.

Well, Binbrook hasn't been an RAF station for years. RAF Binbrook closed in 1988 when the last of the RAF's lightning fighters (the frightening lightning) were withdrawn from service. I believe that, ever since, the RAF Binbrook site has been known as Brookenby. The runways have been largely dug up for hardcore. I joined the RAF 2 years before Binbrook closed but never served there. It's a worrying sign of the times to list the number of RAF units that have closed since!
